Mental Health Awareness Month – A High School Athlete’s Story

Mental Health Awareness Month – A High School Athlete’s Story

Injuries can be devastating to an athlete of any age. It typically means loss in many respects… of goals, dreams, aspirations, normal physical activity, interaction with teammates and just being part of a team. Over the years, many tears have been shed in sports medicine offices over a diagnosis that results in that loss. But where does the athlete go from there. What supports do they have? Is there a parent who also expresses disappointment or frustration with the diagnosis, or do they express empathy? How about the coach? How about us as sports medicine professionals? Is this an athlete who holds their identity as an athlete only and the injury has now stripped that leaving that athlete with a perceived loss of identity?

All of these things are things to consider. Today on the podcast, I have a very special guest to me. My son. He suffered a sports injury his sophomore year which led to a significant acute decline in his mental health. We are going to discuss his experiences and his story.

    Dental Injuries in Sports

When we talk about sports medicine, we think about injuries to all sorts of structures in our body…the muscles and tendons, ligaments, bones, the brain…..but what about your teeth? You’ve all seen professional hockey players with their jack-o-lantern type smiles as a badge of honor. What do we need to be thinking about in sports with our teeth and how can we protect your pearly whites? Today on the podcast we talk with a dentist about the common injuries to the teeth we may see in sports.

Life as an Athletic Trainer. National Athletic Training Month 2021

Life as an Athletic Trainer. National Athletic Training Month 2021

We are nearing the end of March 2021. It is Brain Injury Awareness Month but certainly not to be overlooked, it’s also National Athletic Training Month. I’ve said it before that I don’t think it’s a coincidence, given that the important role our athletic trainers take in concussion awareness, education, diagnosis and management that both athletic training and brain injury awareness are featured in the same month. Today on the podcast, I am joined by three athletic trainers who have a played a prominent role in my life as a sports medicine physician. I’ve certainly learned from them and the many other athletic trainers I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years. Let’s talk athletic training!

CTE: A Conversation with Chris Nowinski

CTE: A Conversation with Chris Nowinski

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, otherwise known as CTE, is a major topic when talking about the spectrum of things related to brain injury in sports. From its first descriptions in 1928 by Dr. Harrison Martland when coining the term “Punch Drunk Syndrome” to its portrayal in the movie “Concussion” with Will Smith starring as pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu, many now have concerns about the effects of repetitive head trauma in our athletes. Today on the podcast I’m joined by a former WWE wrestler, now researcher, who has taken a lead role in raising awareness of CTE.

Remembering Jake Snakenberg: Brain Injury Awareness Month 2021

Remembering Jake Snakenberg: Brain Injury Awareness Month 2021

It’s March and that means it’s Brain Injury Awareness Month. It’s easy for many of us to see the many patients who come into our practices or we evaluate on the sidelines and help guide them through their evaluation and recovery from their concussion. But as a pediatric sports physician who has a huge interest in concussions, I would be remiss to not acknowledge the significance of this month for those families who have unfortunately lost a child to a brain injury sustained in sports. Today on the podcast, I am honored to be joined by the mother of a young man who lost his life to a brain injury sustained in football as well as a prominent school psychologist who partnered with this mom to turn the loss into a positive for many other young athletes who have suffered concussions over the almost last 2 decades.

Excellent Sports Medicine Podcast

This research based podcast is loaded with clinically relevant information. The guests share studies and break down the information into an easily digestible fashion. The host does a great job asking the guests questions and providing recap/ highlights to each discussion. Thank you for providing a free resource to those of us who work in pediatric sports medicine. As an athletic trainer it is not easy to find extra time to review research, but the ability to listen into the podcast format allows me to stay up to date on best practices! Thank you

Excellent podcast

Great information with some really great guests. I always learn something new!

Great way to keep learning

Very engaging host. Content is detailed enough to help a sports medicine provider gain insight, but broken down well enough that non-sports providers, and parents of young athletes will learn a lot too.
