    Reflections at 50

If I was a cleverer Podcast host, I would have timed this better and had my 50th episode coincide with this. But – alas I’m on episode 47.

As I turn 50 today, I wanted to take some time to reflect on my career and those who have helped me get to where I am today. And since I have my own podcast, a place where I can record things to put out there for anyone to listen to, what better avenue than this to spend some time reflecting. On today’s episode, I’ll be looking back and giving you some background to my story and taking some opportunity to say thanks to many people who have been instrumental in helping me become the physician and person I am today.

The Adaptive Training Foundation: A Conversation with David Vobora

The Adaptive Training Foundation: A Conversation with David Vobora

As sports medicine professionals, we interact with athletes at all levels. I was one of a handful of sports medicine physicians who started from a pediatric background and work with an NFL team as one of their team physicians. It was a part of my career I won’t ever forget, and no question gave me additional ‘street cred’, so to speak, in the sports medicine world. But for me it wasn’t about being in the locker room with some truly remarkable athletes. It was meeting some truly incredible human beings. Most people look to professional athletes as idols, as people above and beyond the rest of us. Even though I’ve been around many pro athletes, I have a few of those that if I met would be super nervous – my favorite player of all time, Ryne Sandberg, who I did have the honor to meet, was one of those. But they are also just human, fallible, and broken people as all of us are, and although some enjoy the glory and the fame, it can be a burden as well. It can lead to pressure to perform and can lead to some dark places. My guest today is an athlete I met when he was a player for the St Louis Rams, who had some low points, but like a Phoenix, rose from that low place to truly become an inspiration to others, including me. I’m honored to have him on the podcast today to share his story and some of the remarkable work he is doing.

    The Athlete With Trouble Breathing

    The Athlete With Trouble Breathing

Athletes with trouble breathing are nothing new. Obviously, athletes may get winded with deconditioning or just a really hard work out. But what about when it isn’t expected? Commonly we think of asthma and as an asthmatic since college, it is a near and dear problem to me. But not all things that may seem like asthma are truly asthma. Today on the podcast we will discuss some things to consider when evaluating an athlete with concerns of being short of breath or with trouble breathing with exercise.

    Iron Deficiency in Athletes

    Iron Deficiency in Athletes

Iron Deficiency is an often under recognized source of reduced performance and fatigue particularly in female athletes. Endurance athletes seem to experience this more commonly, but we certainly do see other athletes who may have these struggles as well. But are we diagnosing and treating it properly? I’ve heard several speakers on this topic over the last 5 years and it has revolutionized my approach and thinking about the topic. Today we’ll expand your knowledge and perhaps provide you a different way of thinking of caring for your athletes who are iron deficient.

Life as an Athletic Trainer: National Athletic Training Month 2022

Life as an Athletic Trainer: National Athletic Training Month 2022

It is March 2022, and it is National Athletic Training Month. Last year we did an episode with 3 athletic trainers with whom I’ve crossed paths and enjoyed it so much I wanted to do that again. Today on the podcast, I am joined by three athletic trainers who have all played a role in my life in my development as a sports medicine physician. I’ve learned from them, and I hope you will all learn a little about them and from them as well. Time to dive into the world of athletic training!

    Spondylolysis

    Spondylolysis

Back pain in the young athlete. It’s something we often don’t think twice about in adults, but in kids, back pain in the active athletic kid is often a different beast. One of the more common conditions is the spondylolysis or a stress fracture of the pars interarticularis. It is a condition that can go undiagnosed for a long time. Today on the podcast we have an expert in the area of spondylolysis and I’ve always enjoyed his lectures on this topic. I’m sure you’ll appreciate his take…

Excellent Sports Medicine Podcast

This research based podcast is loaded with clinically relevant information. The guests share studies and break down the information into an easily digestible fashion. The host does a great job asking the guests questions and providing recap/ highlights to each discussion. Thank you for providing a free resource to those of us who work in pediatric sports medicine. As an athletic trainer it is not easy to find extra time to review research, but the ability to listen into the podcast format allows me to stay up to date on best practices! Thank you
