Is the Concussion Return to Play Protocol Too Complicated?
The 6th Concussion in Sport Group Meeting was last year around this time and earlier this year in June of 2023 the updated guidance from this group was published. A subtle but important change was made to the return to play progression. I’ve had several people reach out to me for clarification as to how we should be approaching this. We’ve also set out to tackle this for our Missouri high school athletes as to what revisions we may need to make to our protocols. But have we made this process too confusing for those who aren’t in the sports medicine and sports concussion world? Today, we’re going to do a quick take on the Concussion Return to Play process.

Patellar Instability
There are a handful of knee injuries that are seen commonly in the adolescent age group. Patellar dislocations and subluxations rank high on that list. However, it’s an injury that is sometimes misunderstood and there has been a tendency in the past to be conservative, at least to start, with non-operative management. But is that really the best choice or are the tides shifting? Today on the podcast I have a sports surgeon to discuss the wonderful world of patellar instability.

The History of Osgood-Schlatter
I wanted to try something new today with the podcast. As I’ve become older and more seasoned, I’ve had a growing interest in history and the history of things, particularly in medicine. I was never a big history fan in high school. I tolerated it. Don’t get me wrong, I had some great teachers of history in high school. But I was much more of a science and math nerd. For a while I’ve wanted to do an episode about Osgood Schlatter apophysitis, which is such a common problem in pediatrics. I did some digging into some of the historical articles about Osgood Schlatter and thought I’d take an episode to take about some of the interesting things I found and ways it was managed a century ago. Let’s get some plutonium and the Delorean and take a trip back a century ago and talk some Osgood Schlatter.

Safer Sidelines with Stephanie Kuzydym
I think any of us who are involved in sports medicine and the care of young athletes appreciates those in the media who just get it. I know I’ve been interviewed multiple times over the years for either print articles or for broadcast and sometimes the focus of the article or interview doesn’t seem to get what we really want to convey to public when certain quotes or sound bites are chosen over others. It’s really refreshing when we have friends in the media who can really highlight a topic and who do it well. Today on the podcast, we speak with an award-winning journalist and discuss her journey into the world of sports safety and advocating for the health of our athletes.

The Amsterdam Concussion Guidelines
If you are involved even a little bit with concussion care, you are probably aware that the latest Concussion in Sport Group reports came out mid-week in June 2023. A large series of systematic reviews and updated clinical recommendations were published and are all available free to download from the British Journal of Sports Medicine from two different issues. We are going to review the updated guidelines with a trusted colleague who was part of the process. Let’s find out what’s new in the world of concussions.

Adaptive Sports
One of the things I have loved about doing this podcast is the ability to educate people. But it’s not only for the education of my listeners, but for me personally as well. In preparation for each episode, I’ll review articles and various online resources to come up with an outline of the discussion. I will sometimes have guests send me presentations they have made on the topic to give me a better idea of what they like to discuss on a particular topic. Today, we are going to talk about something I am familiar with, being a sports medicine physician, but an area I honestly don’t have much personal experience with. I’m excited and interested and ready to learn more about Adaptive Sports Medicine
