    Dr. R. Douglas Fields is Chief of the Nervous System Development and Plasticity Section at the NIH and Adjunct Professor in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science at the University of Maryland, College Park. He studies how experience regulates development and changes over time (plasticity) in the brain, as well as the mechanisms at a cellular level that are involved in learning. When not doing science, Doug enjoys rock climbing, mountain climbing, building acoustic guitars, and making his own beer and wine.

    Dr. Ayanna Thomas is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Graduate Program in Psychology at Tufts University. Her research aims to better understand how our memories work, how our memories fail, how we perceive our memory function (metacognition), how memories change over time, and the impacts and implications of these aspects of memory in our lives. In her free time, Ayanna loves watching movies. She and her husband always watch a different horror movie each night in October to celebrate Halloween.

    Dr. Michael Hochella is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech. His research is at the intersection of nanoscience and environmental geochemistry. He studies very small things that can impact the health of the planet and the health of humans. Since childhood, Mike has been fascinated by airplanes and flying, and he received his pilot’s license as an undergraduate student. Over 45 years later, he still delights in seeing Earth from the pilot’s seat thousands of feet above ground.

He is also Co-Founder of Intellia Therapeutics, Locus Biosciences, and TreeCo. He applies CRISPR gene editing technologies in bacteria to make food healthier, promote beneficial gut microbes, and help us be healthier. Outside work, he spends time with his wife and kids, does high intensity cardio exercise, and practices yoga.

    Dr. Natalia Vergara is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Sue Anschutz-Rodgers Eye Center, University of Colorado School of Medicine on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Natalia uses stem cells to understand how the retina forms during development and how it degenerates during disease with the goal of developing therapies for patients with vision loss. In her free time, Natalia loves traveling, hanging out, cooking, and enjoying food with friends and family, including her husband and two young kids.

Excellent episode with Dr. Weiner

The cancer research (and successes!) that you illustrated in your interview has definitely given me hope, as David wished. If I need to wrestle with cancer yet again, I’m glad he and his colleagues have my back.

Knowledgeable; Introspective on true elites.

I’ve now binged on 300 episodes over two months. There is a lot of exciting research being done! It is fun to get a few tid-bits on what researchers are doing both in academia and private sectors.
What I have found in all the episodes thus far, is that I have yet to hear of a person who’s had an average or low income upbringing.
Every person interviewed has a large pedigree of top notch schooling. That isn’t bad but it is very telling that only a certain slice of people behind the science are being interviewed.
Most hobbies I’ve heard are the same highbrow type responses and it gets old quick.
The series isn’t as inspirational as it is semi informative. I see it more as a way for people to brag a bit about what they are doing rather than showing that they are not robots. That’s my opinion though! I’ll listen for interesting research topics, that’s all, though I could just view reddit.

First experience with science

My daughters 8th birthday, she received a microscope, she is hooked, she enjoys me bringing home dead bugs to magnify. She is keeping a journal of everything she sees at the different magnifications. We have been listening to podcast for years at bed time. This is one that doesn’t put her right to sleep. It is super gratifying watching her as she is excited about the things she is “discovering “ OK so I am not a smart man, you could say I never lived up to my potential. All that being said thank you for this podcast and giving her examples of how to become a scientist and me a direction that I can help her along. You are the best. If possible say hi to Landrey Lyn, last name withheld. Thank you for giving a smart kid with dumb parents an avenue to learn to keep moving forward in science.
