    I have battled with some form of mental illness for as long as I can remember, anxiety, depression, etc. I have good seasons and bad seasons - at times feel like I’ve escaped it, and at others I feel like David in the Psalms asking God, “Why have you forsaken me?”

    This is why I became really angry a few weeks ago when I saw a prominent pastor say that it is “reckless and unbiblical” for a pastor to be in ministry who has mental illness or who has serious doubts about their faith.”

    What was reckless and unbiblical was his statement and attitude.
    As a pastor who has battled with this I want you to know that:

    My first speeding ticket was on Marchbanks Road in Anderson, SC. The funny thing: when I began telling people about it, everyone told me the exact spot where I was pulled over!
    It was a speed trap!
    We all know about speed traps when we're driving but did you know, there are leadership traps as well?
    Leadership traps will literally tear down what has taken time to build throughout years of leadership.
    Trap One: Personal Insecurities When we allow personal insecurities to dominate our mindset they will always manifest themselves in our ability to lead.

    Self awareness is one of the greatest things a leader can have. The sooner a leader recognized his/her own personal insecurities, the sooner they can begin to work through them.
    For example, when I first began my leadership journey my personal insecurities came out in two major ways...
    1. Sarcasm
    The best way for me to deal with something was to make a joke about it. Sarcasm will work short term, but long term it will cause people to lose respect for you as a leader.
    2. Passive Aggressive Behavior
    I learned the hard way that guilt drives people but people do not want to be driven, they want to be led.
    As a leader, I cannot allow my personal insecurities to drive me down a path where I do what is easy rather than doing what is right.
    Trap Two: Mistakes
    Making mistakes doesn’t mean you are a bad leader. It means you are trying to be a leader. If a leader isn’t making mistakes, more than likely, they are not taking enough risks.

    One of the biggest barriers that holds leaders back is an unwillingness to execute. I’ve told people for years: ideas are crap, execution matters.
    When we execute, there are unforeseen circumstances and situations that develop, which does not dismiss the need for leadership; it actually requires it.
    The only time mistakes are bad is when we continue to make the same one over and over again. At that point it isn’t a leadership issue, it’s a competency issue.
    It’s sorta like the great theologian Mike Tyson once said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the damn mouth!”
    Trap Three: The False “Care Assumption”
    Everyone on a team should add value. The more a person cares, the more value they will add.

    I’ve started two churches and a business. At times, I’ve been extremely bothered because no one seemed to care like I did.
    Don't get me wrong, I have a great team. They all love their jobs, but no one will ever love it as much as me.
    You can hire talent; you can’t hire heart.
    Trap Four: They Can Read My Mind
    Even the people who work closest with you cannot anticipate what you want. I’ve discovered the clearer I am about expectations, the more I set the team up for success.

    I used to get so angry as a leader when I walked into a room and things were not what I had expected.
    One day I was venting and a friend told me, “Hey P, if you had just told us what you wanted we would have made it happen, but we can’t read your mind.”
    This is when I came up with the phrase, “We cannot hold people accountable for unspoken and unrealistic expectations.”
    Trap Five: Don’t Get To Close To The People You Lead
    If I engage people’s minds I can impact the way they think—but if I can engage their hearts I can impact the way they feel. And impacting their hearts does not come about through barking order.

    have heard this a lot and there are really smart people on both sides of the debate.
    I personally know how hard it is to be close to people and things go completely wrong.
    However, I still say its ok to be close with the people you lead.
    Because I think Jesus was the greatest leader who has ever lived on the planet and He had a group of leaders He was super close to.

    Social media is an incredible tool/resource when it comes to communication, branding and keeping up with friends and family members all over the world.

    However, it’s also become a source of frustration, anxiety and even depression for so many people; especially those with a leadership position.

    There are not many areas where I would consider myself an expert; however, in the area of dealing with "haters" I feel like I’ve earned a doctorate degree.

    How to Handle Internet Hate


    I’ve had the “privilege” to meet a few “internet trolls” in my lifetime and after doing so, I really did feel sorry for them.

    You could tell they were miserable and not the person they projected themselves to be on the internet.

    The first step to handling online hate is to understand that the person writing these nasty comments to you is broken and in need of the Divine compassion Jesus equips you with, daily.


    People either add energy to your life or take energy from it. No exceptions.

    When people are a negative source of energy, I simply block them, courtesy of Bob Goff's permission.

    Comments and feedback should be used for information, not motivation because, if we live by the comments, we will die by them as well.


    Only engage if there is something that is a flat out lie and engage the comment, not the person.

    Recently, someone online wrote that I did not complete treatment in 2016.

    I’ve been called all sorts of things but that was an instance where I had to say something because it was untrue.

    It was something I busted my ass to do and I was freaking proud of the fact I had done the hard work.

    After I directly addressed the comment, they actually took the comment down.

    A few years ago on a trip to Israel, while standing on Mt. Carmel, an incredible insight hit me.
    Mt. Carmel is where one of the most well known miracles in the Bible took place (fire from heaven); however, while the miracle was incredible--it wasn't what was essential to the survival of the people.

    Question: If there had been a drought for 3 years--what is the LAST thing you would want to fall from the sky?


    Which is why, after the fire fell, the story doesn't end...

    ...but rather continues with Elijah praying for rain--and continually sending his servant to the top of the mountain to see if the rain was coming (which, after the 7th trip, the servant reported seeing a cloud.)

    He prayed once for fire--but had to pray seven times as hard for rain.
    One of the temptations for a communicator is to "bring the fire" on people (because it's easy!)

    However, most of the people in our churches today are dehydrated spiritually - and 'bringing the fire" will not draw them in, but drive them away.

    What they really need is rain; however, in order for that to happen we, as leaders, must be willing to put in the work to make that happen.

    With this in mind - here are four questions I work through when I am putting together a message.

    1 - Have I Prioritized Making An Appointment With Myself?
    2 - What Is The Major Takeaway I Want For The Listener?

    Option A Takeaway: My pastor is really godly and intelligent. Option B Takeaway: I can do that!

    3 - Am I Willing To Get Input?
    4 - Am I Doing All I Can To Be As Fresh As Possible On Sunday?

    Three Things Leaders Can Do To Help Their Church Grow

    In last podcast we went over three reasons churches do not grow - today we are going to dive into three things we can do in order to do our part.
    (Side note - I don’t believe “it’s just God!” If that were the case then every church in the world would be growing!) YES - it is God—but it’s also some other key factors.
    #1 – Prayer

    Prayer doesn’t change God – it changes us!
    I am 100% sure as a leader you have prayed for your church to grow; however, when it really begins to catch fire is when we lead the people we lead to pray for this as well...
    ...because as they pray God will change their hearts and will allow us to be on the same page.

    #2 – Plan

    The inability to decide between what is good and what is best.Confusion as to how to plan for the future. Here are five questions your leadership team can discuss that will help you effectively plan for the fall.

    #1 – What does our local public school calendar look like?
    What does this have to do with church?
    So goes the school schedule, so go the attendance patterns.
    The best weekend to launch a vision based series that will fire up the core is whenever the students go back to school.
    In January people "get back in church" for their New Years resolution, and...in the fall they do it again during this time frame.
    So - what will your church do to reengage them?
    (This year Second Chance Church, the church I pastor, is doing an "I Love My Church" Series that will begin with everyone who attends getting a free T-shirt...more about how it goes later on!)

    #2 – What will you do to keep them engaged?
    Often times as a leader--when people came back to church I thought they would stay; however, I quickly learned that after they return for a few weeks--they are highly likely to begin drifting away again if we do not put in the effort to keep them engaged.
    Often times the fall is an awesome time to do a "felt needs" series, like one on relationships, or even a, "You Asked For It" series where you focus on the questions people really do what to know.

    #3 – What’s your plan for developing leaders?
    If your church is going to reach more people - then you are going to need more leaders.
    Leaders, after they are identified, must be developed--that being the case, what's your plan for doing so?
    In my opinion, there is not a one size fits all plan; however, one of the most careless ways to approach leadership development is to simply say, "let them develop themselves." (I took this approach for far too long.)
    You can read through a book together, watch leadership video curriculum, or even attend a conference or do an offsite together.
    But--whatever you do--do something, because as the capacity of the leaders around you grows--so will their ability to handle responsibility.

    #4 – What are you doing for your Christmas offering this year?
    If you don't take a Christmas offering--you can skip this question, no big deal.
    However, if you do take a Christmas offering, right now is the time you need to begin to prepare for it.
    I know it seems to be a long way away...but, it's not - and if you begin to plan now and then assign certain people to execute the plan along the way - the possibility of a significant increase in giving http://perrynoble.com/hello/se...will become a reality.

    #5 – What is the next big step of faith The Lord wants you to take?
    We can’t take steps towards it if we do not identify it.
    Is it to launch a building campaign, start another service or campus, hire additional staff...this list could go on.
    However, determining the next step is essential to getting the staff, volunteers and attenders fired up about the same thing.

Good stuff.

I really like this podcast and Perry's speaking/interview style. If you listen to his sermons or read his blog, you'll definitely enjoy it too. I only wish it was on a regular, fixed schedule (once/week or every other week).

Good for young leaders

I’ve been listening for a year or so. Perry and Logan do a great job giving young or new leaders a crash course in topics that will come up in ministry. I’m eating this up if I’m in that season of leadership. More seasoned leaders might want to look elsewhere.
