Dr. Chelsea Turgeon provided a fantastic lecture for last year’s Nonclinical Summit. As I was preparing for this year’s 2024 Summit in April, I thought you would genuinely appreciate hearing part of that presentation here on the podcast.
She starts by explaining how she recognized her poor fit for a career in medicine in medical school and residency. Much of it was because of her need to meet the expectations of others in her life, rather than pursuing her passions. But the longer she stayed in medicine, the more miserable she became.
What began as a 5-week leave of absence became a permanent exit from her OB/gyne residency. She goes on to describe her journey, first teaching English in South Korea, to becoming a Digital Nomad, starting her own business, and generating a six-figure income while living in 20 different countries.
She finishes her presentation by describing how she and others found meaningful work while living the most interesting and fulfilling life she could imagine.

Light Your Entrepreneurial Fire and Create Your Ideal Life

Light Your Entrepreneurial Fire and Create Your Ideal Life

Our guest this week was working as a dentist when her entrepreneurial instincts kicked in. She created a very successful referral-based dental clinic, then a professional dance company, followed by a business coaching company for dentists. After that, she developed a social media agency with 14 full-time employees, which later morphed into her current business Unleashing Influence, Inc.
Dr. Angela Mulrooney completed her Doctorate in Dental Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and ran her own practice from 2009 until 2015 in Calgary, Alberta. She now helps clients pivot to entrepreneurship, leverage their expertise, and do work they love from any location they choose while earning more.
During our interview, Angela tells us her unique story, including her experiences as a consultant and coach helping other clinicians build their own businesses. She also explains how marketing using LinkedIn drives much of her own business, and how you can do the same.
Before exiting the interview, she has encouraging words for physicians who are frustrated, bored, or disillusioned with working in the corporate healthcare system.

The Ultimate Swindle Known As Sham Peer Review

The Ultimate Swindle Known As Sham Peer Review

Physicians leave clinical medicine for a variety of reasons. Many leave due to burnout or job dissatisfaction. However, a small and growing number have been forced out of practicing medicine by a process called sham peer review.
Peer review is a legitimate process to protect patients in which fellow physicians on a hospital medical staff objectively review a physician’s work. But the process can also be used to falsely accuse physicians of poor performance to silence them and have them removed from the medical staff. The process almost always results in a National Practitioner Databank report, which makes it difficult to maintaining malpractice insurance coverage, and eventual rejection from payor physician panels.
The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) and Dr. Lawrence R. Huntoon have spent the past twenty years fighting this unfair abuse of the peer review process. Dr. Huntoon is the Past President of the AAPS and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons since 2003. He has also been the Chairman of the AAPS Committee to Combat Sham Peer Review since 2004 and is an internationally recognized and court-qualified expert in sham peer review.
In this week’s interview, Larry describes how sham peer review works, and why it is so devastating to physicians. He also provides tips on how to lower your risk of sham peer review, recognize it early, and address it when it happens.

The Truth About Medical Specialists and UM Jobs

The Truth About Medical Specialists and UM Jobs

One of the most common questions we get is whether there are health plan utilization management medical director jobs for specialists. It is a popular nonclinical job, and there is a widely held belief that only primary care physicians qualify.
This question and many others were addressed by my guest, Dr. Richard Berning, in May of 2019 for podcast episode 88. Today’s episode is the replay of that interview. Dr. Berning practiced pediatric cardiology for 20 years before deciding to leave clinical medicine and take his first job as a medical director for a large health plan. And in today’s interview, he explains why he loves that job. He also describes the requirements for landing the job, the usual job duties, and why it is open to both primary care physicians and specialists.
Rich also provides tips for obtaining applicable experience while still working clinically, and how to find that first full-time position as a medical director.

How To Know If You Will Love Medical Writing

How To Know If You Will Love Medical Writing

In this week’s show, John interviews Dr. Morgan Leafe. Dr. Leafe is a board-certified pediatrician with over 20 years of experience in clinical practice and medical education. She received her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration (MHA) with an Informatics Concentration from St. Joseph’s University, also in Philadelphia. She is also board-certified in Clinical Informatics.
Morgan was very intentional about leaving clinical medicine and starting a freelance nonclinical career that allows her to work remotely, including while traveling. She chose to become a medical writer and started part-time about 5 years ago. Today she writes full-time, with a focus on writing for medical education companies, blogs, websites, life care planning organizations, board review companies, and others.
In today’s interview, Morgan describes her career journey and the types of writing that she does. She provides advice on how to explore and prepare for a career in medical writing, including the characteristics of each genre and how to use mentors and networking to find writing projects as a freelancer.
