Checkmate! Will it be the MiG-21 of the 21st Century?

Revealed to the world at the 2021 MAKS Air Show, the Sukhoi Su-75 Checkmate is a planned single engine fifth generation stealth fighter for the Russian Air Force and as an export option for Russia’s allies.  Internally the fighter is designated as the T-75.

The model revealed at the air show is essentially an early engineering prototype; today we will take a look at what we know about the Checkmate including some interesting design inspirations, its reported capabilities, and which nations might consider adopting the Checkmate as their frontline fighter.

Hypersonic Weapons for the Super Hornet

Hypersonic Weapons for the Super Hornet

Let’s take a look at the X-51 Waverider and how the Super Hornet could be getting a hypersonic weapons upgrade!
The Navy’s current air deployed anti-ship weapon is the AGM-84 Harpoon, which has been in service for decades.  With over 7,000 examples built it is hard to argue that the Harpoon has been a successful design, however with its subsonic speeds and the quickly escalating capabilities of near peer adversaries, a faster longer ranged missile is needed.  As a result the  US Navy has begun  researching what it would take to produce a hypersonic anti-ship missile that could be deployed from the Super Hornet.

Today we will take a look at some of the developments in the ongoing hypersonic missile research programs and how they would conceptually work on the Super Hornet.

HAL Tejas India's Home Grown Fighter

HAL Tejas India's Home Grown Fighter

The Tejas is a single-engine multirole fighter which features a tailless, compound delta wing design that omits horizontal stabilizers in the tail.  This allows for better close-combat, high-speed, and high-alpha performance characteristics than comparable traditional wing designs.  Extensive wind tunnel testing on scale models and complex computational fluid dynamics analysis have optimized the aerodynamic configuration for minimum supersonic drag, a low wing-loading, and high rates of roll and pitch. Tejas is designed with "relaxed static stability" for enhanced maneuverability and agility. Originally intended to serve as an air superiority aircraft with a secondary ground-attack role, its flexibility permits a variety of guided air-to-surface and anti-shipping weapons to be integrated for multirole and multi-mission capabilities.

F16 vs Gripen The Philippines Fighter Competition

F16 vs Gripen The Philippines Fighter Competition

Recently the Philippine Air Force or PAF has stepped up its efforts to obtain modern fighters, narrowing down their final selection to either the advanced Block 70 F-16 or the Saab JAS 39 C and D Gripen. This competition comes at a time with ever increasing tensions in the South China Sea.
The economic and geostrategic importance of the South China Sea cannot be understated: Some one third of global maritime shipping passes through it, accounting for over 3 Trillion Dollars in trade each year.
Today the PAF operates some 12 Korean Aerospace Industries FA-50 Fighting Eagle Light combat aircraft.  These FA-50s began operations for the PAF in 2015, after a decade long hiatus following the 2005 retirement of the Northrop F-5.

Either the Block 70 F-16 or JAS 39 Gripen would be a significant step up from the FA50, let’s take a look at the proposed offers for each aircraft along with their pros and cons for the PAF
