Bryan Edward Hill on "American Carnage" and the Age of Trump The Chauncey DeVega Show

    • Politics

Bryan Edward Hill is the writer of such comic books as the Batman Detective Comics series, Batman and the Outsiders, and also Michael Cray. His newest project is American Carnage.
Bryan shares his thoughts on the rise of Trump, the New Right, and making art and telling the truth in this moment. He also explains the connections between existential angst, extremism, and why men and boys join such groups as ISIS and white supremacist organizations. Chauncey and Bryan also reflect on fandom and "representation", the symbolic power of black masculinity, internalized racism, and the importance of mentors and other teachers.

And during this week's podcast Chauncey "connects the dots" between the various reactions to Kamala Harris's defeating Joe Biden during the first Democratic presidential debates and how sexism and racism are now being deployed against her. Chauncey also laughs at how Donald Trump's twitter invite to meet North Korean tyrant Kim Jong-Un sounds like a personals ad from Craigslist in the casual encounters section back in the 1990s and early 2000s.
There is also a fun "Easter egg" at the end of this week's podcast where Bryan and Chauncey discuss the Punisher and Batman.
