“You don’t want to be short-term trading based on valuations at these times.”
    --
This has been historical for everyone. New developments, new experiences, and extraordinary measures are being taken by countries every moment. COVID-19 is very real and this is not something can be ignored so Edmund will be joined by Jason and Zarr for a special podcast / video chat to emphasize how we must all adapt to the current situation. This is our take on what is happening today.

    - We know that there’s been a multitude of information regarding COVID-19 and its global impact as well as its effects on financial markets. We’ve spent the past few weeks combing through as much reliable data as possible, so here are the summary points that we feel are worth highlighting from the Caylum analysts.

    - What is the difference between a recession and a depression and why we fear the latter. The real question we need to focus on is, realistically, how long will this have an impact on the economy?

    - The ongoing credit crisis and why this is important for you to understand. Listen to the discussion on forced liquidation and margin calls.

    - There is always going to be an opportunity. These are times to be cautious, not overly optimistic. “It is better to be late than early at this point.”

    - An overview of our thoughts on the Philippine market.

“In Apollo 13, the mission falls apart. The control room is chaos. The Head of NASA approaches the Director and says, "This could be the worst disaster NASA has ever experienced."

The Director answers: "With all due respect, Sir, I believe this is going to be our finest hour."

"Emotions can take control of the market in the moment, but eventually the market always corrects itself." - Mark Jason Mariposa, CFA
    --

There's a lot to take on as we ring in 2020 with a week filled with plenty of news and current events that have taken hostage of both the global and local market scenarios. It's easy to be stricken with fear when issues become unpredictable and nothing is certain so we invited one of our CTS Global analysts and Caylum coach, Jason Mariposa, to join us and share what he knows, what he doesn't know, and his thoughts on what could happen in the short-term regarding the following topics:

    - The escalating tensions between Iran and the United States and how multiple clashes in the past have affected the market
    - Is it truly an event-driven sell-off if it affects the fundamentals? A case study of the water concessionaires in the Philippines.
    - A look into Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs)and the stocks that are both directly & indirectly affected by this issue
    - What do we do now? Choosing between the steady but highly valued companies vs. the distressed but potential opportunities

"You never see yourself as a finished product." - Chad Pacheco
    --

In the premiere episode for Season 2, we finally come back together to dissect and analyze the current environment of the Philippine stock market - one that has become what feels like an endless waiting game. Edmund brings into the conversation fellow Caylum senior coaches, Leonard Chua and Chad Pacheco, who have managed to keep their respective trading teams at the firm afloat this year, all the while adapting to whatever the market tide rolls in.

    - The main question on our minds - is it different this time? What exactly is really happening to the PH market? Is there hope?
    - Discovering your edge and finding the difference between surviving and outperforming.
    - Aligning every trade that you make with the right objective. Is it to make money or to satisfy your need to be right?
    - Is a trading system enough? On the other hand, is trading psychology enough? Looking for the key takeaways that a sideways market has to give.

“Only when the tide goes out do you see who’s swimming naked.” - Warren Buffett

    --
Short Stops is back for a follow up episode to give you a glimpse of the roundtable discussions that our traders have been engaging in since the market turned around two weeks ago. There’s a misconception that the market has been challenging only in recent days but in reality, the PSEi is currently moving along the same level of 7,400 as it has been since May of 2013. This means that we’ve been range bound for about six years and Edmund, Charles and Leonard are on the show today to explain to you why this has posed as both a problem and an opportunity, depending on the lens that you view it from.

    - Why is our market actually cheaper today than it was six years ago despite the same index value?
    - Why there’s nothing really new to tell when it comes to the correlation of global markets with emerging markets - interest rates are still low, credit is still cheap and so on. This means that if you want to maximize profit in this market, you need to rely on technicals and sentiment more than fundamentals for the meantime.
    - Is there a full blown crisis? Because everyone’s been talking about a crisis happening for the past 3-5 years.
    - Stock selection is the ultimate key to making money in this kind of environment. Weak markets actually weed out the weak stocks and expose the alphas that you want to focus on.
    - You need to keep an open mind. Everyone has a strong opinion about whether the market is going to go up or if it’s going to go down which is fine. Trade it the way you see it but you have to be quick enough to adapt when the market tells you that you’re wrong.
