Episode 71 Melissa Sue Mims Platt

In October, 2008 police in North Carolina were called to do a welfare check on 31 year-old mother of 2, Melissa Sue Mims Platt. After not hearing from Melissa in quite a while, her mother Marian felt something was wrong. Police found Melissa, in the home she shared with her boyfriend, lying on her bed covered in her own urine and excrement. She had been severely beaten and was barely alive. Melissa was airlifted to the hospital, and police began to question Melissa's boyfriend. He claimed that Melissa had fallen in the tub. The issue was, doctors stated that a severe beating, and not a fall had caused Melissa's injuries; and even worse, she had suffered the injuries several days earlier. In the hospital, Melissa in a brief moment of consciousness, detailed that she was attacked. Sadly, Melissa slipped back into unconsciousness, and despite the best efforts of hospital staff, she died 2 months later in December. As if losing Melissa wasn't bad enough, her family also had to come to grips that Melissa's boyfriend wouldn't face charges in relation to Melissa's death. Doctor's noted long term injuries, suffered over time by Melissa- evidence that clearly points to domestic violence. Eight years later, Melissa's family is struggling to deal with the fact that the person who likely is responsible for Melissa's death remains free. Melissa's sister, Michelle is the guest in this episode.
