The Pattani Tapes: An Interview on Thailand's Feminism and Thailand's Islam with Anticha and Noona The Arts of Travel

    • Places & Travel

Though English language searches only pull up travel advisories and articles about terrorism, Pattani Thailand has one of South East Asia's most vibrant art and activist communities. We headed down to Pattani to interview some of these artists and activists for their thoughts on Art, Islam, Gender, Feminism and to present a more nuanced understanding of this historically and culturally rich area of Thailand.

We spoke to Anticha Sanchai about her incredible story on opening the feminist and progressive Book store: Buku Books. Anticha talks about moving from Chiang Mai to Pattani, how she became a feminist, and her work founding the Buku Football club: a gender inclusive football team that allows muslim boys and girls, of any gender or sexual identity, to learn empowerment through sports.

We also spoke briefly to Noona of Oxfam about her time in Pattani as compared to her home in Krabi. Our conversation centers on Islam, what it means to be a Muslim Feminist and the challenges of raising awareness of domestic violence in Pattani.
