17 - Chris Heier The Explore84 Podcast

    • Self-Improvement

This week we’re joined by Chris Heier, the president, director, and manager of brewery operations at Half Hitch Brewing. This episode comes straight from the patio at Half Hitch, and we learn Chris’ philosophies on good mental and physical health, and some of his physical health tricks might not be endorsed by your doctor.
President, director, and manager of brewery operations is a real mouthful of a title, and Chris says when you’re an entrepreneur you can give yourself whatever title you want, which is a bonus since he says his role as a brewmaster is somewhat like a glorified janitor. Chris and his lengthy title are supported by his siblings and business partners Chase, Kyle, and Brittany. The four person founding team also get a lot of help from their parents around the brewery and restaurant, which is exemplified by their naming. As we learn, a half hitch is the knot you use to tie up your horse, but Chris also wants it to be the knot that ties together their family and their community.
Half Hitch is known for their unique branding and naming of their beers, and there’s a story behind them. Shotgun Wedding was originally the name of a home-brew beer Chris had made back in 2012, and the Farmer’s Daughter and Fire n’ Fury brews that followed after the opening of Half Hitch all make up parts of a fictional story. Chris compares these to different chapters in a book or frames in a comic. One of their most recent beers, Papa Bear, was created to honour their father and his spirit of generosity and compassion for his community. To be true to this, Half Hitch donates a portion of their revenue from sales of Papa Bear to a different charitable cause every month.
