Today on Looking Forward, we’re again going to focus on the world of engineering. In Part 1 of this two-part series, Episode #79, we looked at how engineering has changed over the past few decades and what new areas of specialization have arisen for engineers. We also discussed some of the National Academy of Engineering’s 14 Grand Challenges, whose ultimate objective is to improve our world… and our quality of lives.
In Part 2, we’re going to learn about how engineers are working together to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges. We’ll also learn about the future of engineering, the many opportunities the field will offer, and how you, as a consumer, can support the work of engineers.
To help us with all this, we’ve again brought on our expert on this topic. He’s Levi Thompson. Levi Thompson is a Ph.D. and the Dean of Engineering and Elizabeth Inez Kelley Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware. There he leads more than 3,500 students, 300-plus faculty and staff, seven departments and more than a dozen research centers in expanding the university's ability to address the world's most vexing challenges.
Prior to joining UD, Dr. Thompson was on the faculty at the University of Michigan for 30 years. There his research focused on novel catalytic and energy storage materials, and he served in various leadership roles for hydrogen research, undergraduate education, and diversity recruitment and development efforts. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering, and an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Dr. Thompson's research is focused on developing and commercializing nanoscale materials for catalytic and energy storage applications. He has authored more than 150 publications, is co-inventor on more than 10 patents, and has co-founded two companies focused to commercialize his discoveries.
