    • Investing

We invited one of our Investor Relations Specialists, Ben Katt, to answer our questions and simplify what the process is in creating self directed IRAs. We're gonna be talking about the different types of IRAs. Ben's gonna take over for the next few episodes to talk about self-directed IRAs, the transition between them, all the fees, the process,  just all the goods. So make sure that you hang on all the way to the end, because he's really going to talk to you about how to turn all this money into lots and lots of moolah.

A good place to start is with your tax professional. Let them know what your objective is, what type of transactions you want to be doing in your self-directed IRA, and they can help direct you, based on income, goals etc. You have two paths with self-directed IRAs, Traditional or Roth, which is better? The difference is how you fund the accounts, you fund a Traditional with PRE-tax dollars and pay taxes later when start taking distributions. Depending on your income, your goals and the conversation with your tax professional, it might be the best option for you.

Roth IRA is where you pay your taxes first and then fund it with those POST-tax dollars. Because you funded it post tax dollars you do not have to pay taxes on any future distributions. Other differences are that you can start one at any age, continue to add to a Roth, and are not forced to start taking required minimum distributions at a certain age, like you are in a traditional IRA. Your Roth IRA allows for a tax free growth environment to continue for an extra 15 or even 20 years and beyond.
