Short Time Shots - February 11, 2018 Short Time Wrestling Podcast

    • Wrestling

This is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day's college wrestling scores and more from February 11, 2018. I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant … and I'm holding off on the jokes until later because Ohio University Austin Reese is sitting in an Ohio hospital right now after a gigantic scare. So Austin Reese is a redshirt junior on the Bobcats wrestling team. The 174-pounder from Urbana was leading Old Dominion's Seldon Wright 7-0 in the second period of Sunday's dual ESPN's stream cut away from the action -- and never returned. While there's been no official word other than "health complication" regarding what happened with Reese, a glimpse of the action before the expect restart showed Reese flat on the mat, facedown and being quickly tended to by Ohio athletic trainers. I'd assume EMT's quickly arrived as Reese had to be resuscitated on the mat. Anything other than that is hearsay and I want to respect the privacy of Reese and his family, but I also want to pass along our thoughts, well wishes, and if you're a person of faith, our prayers. According to Ohio head coach Joel Greenlee, Reese is currently hospitalized, but he's awake, talking and stable. This could have ended in a way no one wants to consider. Let's keep him and all of Ohio U in your thoughts this week and beyond. As for the match, the rest of the dual was canceled. Who won? Who cares. That's not important. Now to the wrestling … No. 2 Ohio State got back to its winning ways with an 18-15 win over No. 4 Michigan on Sunday. Wait, winning ways Two unbeaten Buckeyes are no longer unbeaten. The biggest win, no pun intended, came at 285 pounds where Michigan's Adam Coon stopped Ohio State's Kyle Snyder 3-1. The record-crowd of 8,303 loved it as Coon handed Snyder, a two-time NCAA heavyweight champion and of course, two-time World champion and 2016 Olympic champion, his first collegiate defeat since the NCAA finals in 2015. Wrestling Twitter nearly broke, while some people felt the need to puff out chests over a loss. This sets the stage beautifully for March, does it not? Coon's bearhug throw in the second period was the decisive score. Another Ohio State unbeaten fell as Michigan's Stevan Micic avenged an early-season loss to Luke Pletcher and after giving up the first takedown, Micic bulldozed Pletcher the rest of the bout and picked up the 11-5 decision. Myles Amine upended Bo Jordan with a late takedown at 174. This was just a fun dual all over the place. Myles Martin beat Domenic Abounader at 184. Just good stuff. Fifth-ranked Oklahoma State won the Bedlam matchup with Oklahoma for the 15th time in 16 tries. The Cowboys saw Dean Heil walk off the mat in Gallagher-Iba Arena for the final time with a 16-6 major decision win over Sooner Mike Longo. Nick Piccininni topped Oklahoma's Christian Moody 8-2 at 125 in the dual's only matchup of ranked opponents -- depending on the poll. Ok, we'll give you Chandler Rogers' 8-2 win over Dawaylon Barnes, too. No. 8 Arizona State finished the Pac-12 dual slate unbeaten for the first time in 12 years after the Sun Devils beat Cal Poly 38-9. With both teams hit by the injury and flu bug, No. 9 Virginia Tech took the Commonwealth Clash over rival Virginia 22-18. In matches of note, Ryan Blees beat Sam Krivus in sudden victory at 149, Virginia's Fred Green topped Solomon Chishko 6-4 at 157, Hokie true freshman Hunter Bolen continues to improve as he beat Will Schany 5-4 at 174. Hokie hammers David McFadden, Zack Zavatsky and Jared Haught all did as expected. No. 12 South Dakota State set a school record by winning its 13th straight dual with a 24-9 win over West Virginia. Ah yes, college sports, where regional conference rivalries between schools in South Dakota and West Virginia are prevalent. Of note, David Kocer won his 100th match as a Jackrabbit. Kent State knocked off No. 16 Central Michigan 21-13 in what's become the norm - an unpredictable Mid-American Conference --
