    Heavy Petting with Elisheba Fay

Do you want to pet all the dogs? So do we! But we don’t… and here’s why. Emily and Libby welcome Elisheba Fay back to Pod to the Rescue to talk about petting our own dogs and dogs that are new to us, like foster dogs and newly placed rescue dogs. They talk about consent tests when petting dogs, dog body language, how to know if your dog wants to be petted, what to do about dogs who feel conflicted about human attention, and how to deal with your dog who won't leave you alone when you're busy on a Zoom call. This conversation is important for dog bite prevention and is a must-listen for anyone who wants to save dogs!

Why Should We Train Our Dogs? with Eileen Koval

Why Should We Train Our Dogs? with Eileen Koval

What are we talking about when we talk about dog training? Why should we train our dogs, anyway? Is puppy class enough training for my dog? And what kinds of skills should we prioritize when training our rescue dogs? Emily and Libby discuss these questions and more with Certified Dog Behavior Consultant Eileen Koval, owner of Confident Canines in Las Vegas, Nevada. They talk about top skills for dogs to learn, including leave it, watch me, drop it, come, and “do nothing,” why it’s important to teach your dog to influence their environment and control outcomes, and how to avoid dog training mistakes.

This rich conversation was inspired by Eileen’s blog post, “Does My Dog Need Training?” https://www.confidentcaninesdogtraining.com/post/does-my-dog-need-training

The Best

I am so thankful for this podcast.
We brought home an sweet adolescent pittie mix from a shelter who he has turned out to be a little more socially awkward than we anticipated. It was been a tough adjustment, but we are working hard with an awesome trainer to help him improve his leash reactivity and some other over arousal tendencies.
This podcast has been an amazing source for reinforcing our training. It’s not just about the behavior, the context of why we see certain behaviors has been a game changer for me. And to be honest, sometimes I just listen to feel less alone and encouraged. The simple reminder that it is okay to take things slower than planned has made a huge difference for us.
I have scoured the internet and podcasts for different resources and this is the best for anyone bringing home a shelter dog. I’ve been happy to visit the website and links guests have provided too. I have recommended Pod to the Rescue to everyone I know.
Thank you so very much. Words cannot convey how much this resource has helped my family.
