Guidance and Counselling which is one of the required courses for the Master of Education (MEd) programme. The course begins with a discussion on what is counselling and the differences between counselling, guidance and psychiatry. All the concepts, principles and theories of counselling are examined in relation to their application in school counselling. Students are encouraged to discuss the implication of the various theories in counselling in the school and other settings in education.

Episode 1 - Introduction to Counselling
Episode 1 The topic traces the origin of counselling from the 1900s until today. Discussion also focuses on the definition of counselling and the differences between counselling, guidance and psychiatry.

Episode 2 - Counselling Theories I
Episode 2 The topic discusses three counselling theories: psychoanalysis by Freud, Adlerian theory by Adler and person-centred approach by Rogers. Emphasis will be on the assumptions of these theories on human nature and the counselling approach proposed.

Episode 3 - Counselling Theories II
Episode 3 The topic discusses three counselling theories: gestalt therapy by Perls, behavioural theory by Skinner and rational-emotional behaviour by Ellis. Emphasis will be on the assumptions of these theories on human nature and the counselling approach proposed.

Episode 4 The information processing model discussed in this Topic emphasises the need to study the mental events involved in the processing of information.

Episode 5 This topic reintroduces an old concept in the form of constructivism which emphasises that reality is constructed by the learner.

Episode 6 This topic discusses the attributes of critical and creative thinking and how it may be enhanced in the classroom teaching existing subject areas.
