Best Practices for Podcast Show Notes

Best Practices for Podcast Show Notes

As podcasters ourselves at Blubrry Podcasting we have real firsthand experience on the matter and can provide best practices for podcast show notes. We also have changed the way we do show notes over the years, so there is no one template.

Recently Apple has been causing quite the conversation on whether or not they're going to be starting a paid subscription podcast service, and Spotify is having troubles of their own with investors. Something is always happening in the podcast industry, Daniel J. Lewis know this, that's why he created a new service to keep track of it all. Tune in to get all the details.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Looking to be a guest on the show? Let us know.

Recorded live from two well-separated and socially distanced podcast studios in northern and southern Michigan; here’s Podcast Insider.

    Best Practice:

Best practices for podcast show notes

Write your blog post, show notes, etc for Google. Meaning, remember keywords, and things related to SEO. The audio portion is strictly important for listeners only.

The majority of podcast listeners will never see your show notes. So...

Don’t worry too much about what your show notes look like in the different apps. There are some best practices, but you will never get all the different places that list your show notes to look exactly like you want them. It can’t be done.

Transcriptions are not necessarily a good idea for the main show notes. They will not help you with SEO unless they are edited to be good for SEO. If you do transcripts, link them in your show notes as a PDF or to another webpage.

    Blubrry News:

Blubrry January 2021 newsletter went out this week. Read it here.

Next week, a new feature of Advanced Statistics will be released, play tracking. You can read about it in our newsletter and next week on our blog.

Once a month we do a blog post called Focus on Features. This month was on our free service, Subscribe on Android. Read the write-up here.

Our blog, Podcast Insider, has a new, informative post every Monday. The latest was on podcasters using Instagram. Speaking of, follow us on Instagram, @blubrry_podcasting

Todd and Mike will be guests on Podcasting 2.0 With Adam Curry and Dave Jones this week.  Look for it this weekend. https://podcastindex.org

    Interview:

We took one month to feature ourselves and this show. Read the full post here, and share with your podcaster friends that might be interested in listening to the show. And, most importantly Podcasters of the Month can also be guests on the show here, so email MacKenzie (give her about a week to respond).

    Question(s) of the Week:

Question: Why is my browser saying my website is insecure?

Answer: Likely, your SSL certificate is expired or never existed. Google Chrome and Firefox (and a lot of other browsers) are pushing that the whole internet becomes “secure” with SSL. https (secure) instead of the old http. You can’t just add an S and call it a day, it requires an SSL Certificate installed on your website, most web hosts make it easy. Some of web hosts will charge you a yearly fee and others will include that in your hosting fee.

Why You Should Have a Website for Your Podcast

Why You Should Have a Website for Your Podcast

There are plenty of reasons why you should have a website for your podcast. Blubrry has the No. 1 podcast plugin for WordPress, so we're obviously big believers in having your own website, but this episode we go over some of the important reasons why you should have one. Many podcasters man the entire show, website, marketing, etc, and is often a thankless job.

Speaking of which, Todd has had his own site and been handling his show for a decade and a half and is celebrating 1,500 episodes this week 👏

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Looking to be a guest on the show? Let us know.

    News:

Breaker app update: It will not shut down.

Censorship and podcasting. It's fairly cut and dry.

The Daily gets taken off Houston Radio Station.

According to Edison Research, most podcast listening happens midday.

Congratulations Todd, for publishing his 1,500th Geek News Central podcast episode Thurs. Jan 14, 2021! From Podnews.net today:

“Todd Cochrane’s Geek News Central ▸ will today release its 1,500th episode in a live recording from 7.30pm ET via Facebook. Todd is also CEO of Blubrry, and tells Podnews of the benefit of using your own product: “While I love doing my show for my family of listeners, I strongly believe the only way to stay abreast of what is happening, and the struggles podcasters face in building a show and keeping advertisers happy, is by being in the trenches creating content.” Congratulations to him.”

    Best Practice:

Now more than ever, having a website for your show is important.

Having your own website gives you a place to be found outside of any podcasting app.

You have the power to design your site that looks better than a show listing page.

You can do more with it than just podcast (Like blogging, link to your own products, or whatever you want to do).

Provides better SEO in the search engines.

Helps you be found for your topic.

Looks more professional (of course that is up to you to make it look good!).

In the rare case you get removed from some other places, people know where to re-find you. (of course, tell them in the show).

    Blubrry News:

Phase one of the new Dashboard at Blubrry is coming soon.

New voicemail option in the Podcast Insider sidebar. Leave us your feedback, ask a question for the show or just sound off! We love your participation.

PowerPress 8.4.8 released Jan. 13. Bug fix for account linking and other minor bugs.

A lot of the Blubrry team are also podcasters. Shawn, Dave, Jeff, Barry, and of course Todd and Mike, all have their own podcasts.

    Question(s) of the Week:

Question: I submitted my podcast to Amazon two weeks ago and haven’t heard anything back from them. What gives?

Answer: Amazon does not provide any notices or feedback to podcasters (or hosting companies) when you submit to Amazon. Just give it a week or so and then search for your show. The first place to search is music.amazon.com (you have to log in using a free Amazon account).

On Saturday’s Podcast Help Desk episode, "Can you play music in your podcast? And how to find pod-safe music?"

    Interview:

    Website

    Question(s) of the Week:

Question: I published my episode just now. Why can’t I see it in the xxxx directory or app?

Answer: All podcast directories and apps run off your RSS feed. When you update your feed with a new episode, directories, apps and subscribers all check the RSS feed to see if something is new. This is not instant.

ALL these places and your subscribers PULL your feed. Yes, it's available in your feed cause you pushed it, but the directories haven't pulled anything just yet.

It asks for your feed when it gets around to it and PULLS your feed to update your listing (typically in bulk with other shows). Your listeners subscribe to your feed and after that never really touch Apple Podcasts or the other services again.  They are just subscribed to your feed directly in their app of choice. As long as when you publish an episode, you get it if you are subscribed, everything is working.  It works the same as every other directory or app (other than Spotify currently).

There is nothing we or you can do to make that faster. It takes whatever time it takes. To check your RSS feed to make sure it’s working and which episodes are in it, go to CastFeedValidator.com and put your RSS feed address in the box and validate. That will show you what is in the feed and as long as the episode you are looking for is there, it will get to all the directories and apps in time.

I just want you to understand, there is nothing wrong with your feed, anything Blubrry is doing or anything you are doing. It's all based on when your RSS gets pulled by these places. The important part is your feed is up to date and the rest of the world will update it when they want to. We can't force them (unfortunately).

    Podcast Intro Dos and Don'ts

    Podcast Intro Dos and Don'ts

A well crafted podcast intro can make a significant difference to the listeners, and as such, creators should learn some podcast intro dos and don'ts. Todd and Mike made intros the main focus of this episode but they didn't leave out some news going on such as some new podcasters joining Spotify, estimations on how long Rogan will stay there, and research on podcast listening habits.

    Question(s) of the Week:

Question: What is your favorite podcast listening app? And why?

    Answer:

Mike: I use Overcast for my personal podcast listening. If you have an iPhone, it seems to be the best one for me because it’s just organized well and Marco (the developer) really keeps it up to date.  Also, you have the ability to put in any RSS feed and subscribe without it having to be in the overcast directory.

Being that I have to test with just about every one of them out there, I have android and IOS and many podcast apps. My favorite on Android is a tie between Podcast Addict and Pocket Casts.

Todd: Personal listening, Apple Podcasts. Other, Overcast.
