Supporting the inner lives of us grown-ups…
I help people "knock the bricks off their wings and truly fly," as one client beautifully put it...
I'm Kay, an artist, author, and coach. I live in Massachusetts, USA, with my husband, sons, and our 12-1/2-year-old pet chicken. Connect with me at kaylockkolp.com.
PS This show used to be called We Turned Out Okay… You're in the right place! The first 375-ish episodes were created with that name. Much has changed around here, but much has stayed the same. I'm glad you are here!

393: Beautiful and Terrifying… The power of story with author and adventurer Nick Jubber
Nick Jubber brings all sorts of interests – storytelling, nomadism, connections, humanity – into his life and writing.
This is a fantastic conversation that I'm so excited to bring you today, with an accomplished and consummate sharer of ideas. Nick's writing appears in all sorts of publications including The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Globe and Mail, and BBC Online. Nick has spoken on NPR and BBC Radio 4, as well as at numerous festivals. Nick's written plays performed at places like the Edinborough Festival and the Actor's Centre in London.
Today we begin with the provocative drama teacher who set Nick on his way in his early years… and we arrive at ideas that truly leave this podcaster speechless.
That's a pretty tall order and something that hasn't happened often in nearly 400 episodes!
Then heads up - it sounds like the episode's going to wrap up when the interview ends… but that's not the case!
I bring you an ADHD/CECS update and share something I'm excited about: The Asynchronous Idea Party of 2023.
k (at) kaylockkolp (dot) com or kaylockkolp.com/contact to share your idea!
Remember… What you want AND what the obstacle is to what you want.
Let's get this party started –
Happy new year!

392: The Rebranding of ADHD
CAUTION – about 25 minutes in there are swears!
Definitely grab some headphones or listen away from sensitive ears today.
I had a truly bizarre experience last week. I watched my own life play out in a documentary about people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
What you hear today is the birth of my impossible dream:
It's time to rebrand ADHD.
By the way – I've heard it said that "The difficult is that which takes a little time. The impossible is that which takes a little longer."
THAT'S the sense in which I mean impossible above.

391: How to break free (of the trap that you originally set up around yourself for safety)
THANK YOU for your patience… We are a week late with this episode because I've been sick!
I'm better now and I'm here with a story about how I built an electric fence around myself for safety.
How that fence became a prison that kept ME in.
How I have broken myself out.
And how (if this is a trap you're caught in as well) you can break yourself out too!

390: "My body speaks to me and if I don't listen it screams" – Going deep with connection coach Elise Knox
This is a special episode. Somewhere fairly early on my guest, amazing middle-school-teacher-turned-connection-coach Elise Knox, decides she's going to go deep.
And she really does!
If you want to hear how someone can transcend the roles they were born into, the expectations others had for them and instead make their own choice about who they are and what they love, you're in the right place.
If you want to hear the story of someone's rise above illness and the other massive challenges they confronted, you are going to LOVE our conversation.
Then stay tuned! After speaking with Elise I share about how I got well and truly lost on a hike recently.
Do you remember that scene in Maverick, Top Gun 2, where he wanders all disoriented into a diner somewhere in the United States? My son and I wandered into a dollar store miles away from where we left our car (weirdly just the day after we watched that movie). I felt exactly like Maverick, so disoriented.
It turns out that training to walk across the north of England isn't just physical training.
It's mindset as well.
Plus I've got an update for you about the upcoming virtual retreat I am cohosting on "Feeling hopeful in challenging times"!
It's the weekend of October 29th and 30th, invitation coming just after this episode drops!
My cohost and I along with 10 other coaches will put our heart and soul into this retreat. It's going to be awesome and very helpful if you feel in flux due to challenges in your life.
There will be no cost to attend and we appreciate donations of any amount to the amazing nonprofit https://onesolutionglobal.org
If this feels like your jam then make sure to mark your calendar!

Good advice
Hi all, thanks so much for the good advice. I have used many of your tips and tricks. I also like your guests too. Thanks for communicating how much you care because sometimes it's lonely. I live in a foreign country and after 9 years I'm still not great with the language. I find myself constantly questioning my parenting because most people here would do most things differently. It's helpful to know you're out there with positive ideas for turning the (sometimes) negative into the positive. It's also comforting to know that you struggle with balancing all of your priorities and that it's okay to not be perfect. From your magic words to your anecdotes and your resources, I find your podcast to be a moment for me to take stock and celebrate the small victories I may forget about in the race to do it all.
