Those approaching Stoicism for the first time, with the intention of adopting it as a life philosophy, can find it both impossibly dense and extreme in its expectations of its students. For this reason, it is important that there exist a practical interpretation of the high-minded values of this ancient philosophy - to make the understanding and adoption of the basic tenets of Stoicism easier for those just starting out. This podcast helps newcomers get acquainted and comfortable with the practical aspects of Stoicism - it is a stepping stone to those heavier and denser parts of the philosophy that we all, if we truly wish to commit ourselves to practicing the philosophy of Stoicism, must delve into eventually. Erik Davidsen ,

Emphasis on the “Practical”

As a young person in the 1980s, stoicism meant putting up with great pain and discomfort without complaining. The word had been separated from the philosophy, in much the same way that modernism was a style of design rather than a philosophy. Knowing the roots of things was too time-consuming. One had just enough information to know that the New Yorker cartoon was funny, but not enough to know why.

I have been enjoying the pod’s brevity, focus, clarity, and above all, its practicality. I am now primed to read the original texts with a modicum of insight.

R Velcoro ,

Ad talk

The only thing more inane and grating than ads is “talking about ads. “ Just take care of your personal business outside the program and do the show if you wish, please.

Commando Rando ,

We get it.

I think this podcast offers great content and an informative breakdown of the philosophy, but this guy literally spends half the episode begging you to subscribe and rationalizing why it helps. I can’t listen to it anymore.
