Diamond Diehards: Gil Hodges as GOAT or goat

Diamond Diehards: Gil Hodges as GOAT or goat

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz was joined once again by Jeff "Dawg" Healy and they jumped into the 1952 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Spoiler alert, the Yankees won in seven games. Riz and Dawg started with Game 7, but could not resist looking back deeper into some of the key moments in the series when they were examining the performance of beloved Dodgers star Gil Hodges.

Hodges was a borderline MLB Hall of Famer, probably the most borderline ever, considering how close he continually came, including consideration from the Veterans Committee, without getting in. While there are always plenty of numbers to digest for these types of arguments in baseball, the guys talked about the things that can be overlooked, especially so many years after the era in which a player competed. For some comparison, Riz related a story about the red-hot documentary "The Last Dance" featuring NBA legend and former minor-league baseball washout Michael Jordan, with regard to rival Isiah Thomas. Riz & Dawg are set to talk about Jordan some more down the line, once the documentary covers his Airness' time with the Birmingham Barons of the American Association.

Diamond Diehards: Battling COVID-19, Riz tells his story and talks some baseball with Jeff “Dawg” Healy

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Or at least he did until getting interrupted by a bout with COVID-19. Riz came back on the air after a week off and talked with Dawg about his story, and his time in isolation away from the family. He still has a little time left before he can rejoin the population, but so far has fared pretty well. The guys had chatter about the latest Strat simulation numbers, and went over the games and the standings while trying to add some flair to what would have been Jackie Robinson Day around the majors. After Riz's Coronavirus recount, the guys turned to MLB and tried to figure out what kind of plans might work when the games return to the field. How long could the regular season be? What kind of playoffs could be contested? Could a March Madness idea actually work on the diamond? Diamond Diehards: Triple Crown Eloy, Duffy the First to Three, Remembering Al Kaline

Diamond Diehards: Triple Crown Eloy, Duffy the First to Three, Remembering Al Kaline

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Where it seems there is none, he's taking the Strat-O-Matic simulation of the 2020 MLB season as seriously as if it's happening in real life. If you're tired of hearing of Coronavirus and COVID-19, then this is your solace for about a half hour (sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less) a day. Riz, who has brought you an episode every single day since the season started, gave you the scores and highlights from a full Monday slate of baseball, with the spotlight on young white Sox slugger Eloy Jimenez and Royals lefty Danny Duffy. Could Jimenez battle for the Triple Crown this season? Riz also paid tribute to Hall-of-Famer Al Kaline, who died April 6. Kaline was a legend for the Detroit Tigers, and finished in the top three of the MVP voting three times, with a couple of near misses to Yankees catchers.

Riz, who has brought you an episode every single day since the season started, gave you the scores and highlights from a full Sunday slate of baseball, and went in-depth into the standings. Could the Padres possibly play the Indians in the World Series in 2020? Well, that might be worth a futures bet if you give any credence to how Strat handled the first 16th of the simulated season. So close your eyes, drift away, and let yourself imagine there is BASEBALL. Diamond Diehards: Trout Walks Off

    Diamond Diehards: Trout Walks Off

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball, even when it appears there is none to be had. The Strat-O-Matic simulation continues and we have been with you every single day thus far to talk about it. For this episode, there was a little less stress on the games and more on the kids, as Joe's sons Dominic and Xavier joined in as co-hosts. The Rizzos talked about major league baseball and social media, and then they covered what it's like to be a teenager going through the pandemic in 2020. The hang stayed centered mostly on baseball, and how its general absence has made the kids a little less likely to pick up the ball and gloves and have a catch, or do anything baseball related after online school is complete. Dominic and Xavier also gave advice to fellow kids who might be listening to this alongside a parent, and it's not just about staying inside and playing video games! Diamond Diehards: What Rhymes with Samardzija?

Diamond Diehards: What Rhymes with Samardzija?

Joe Rizzo was joined once again by Jeff "Dawg" Healy from the Fordham Crew for this episode, covering the MLB slate for April 3, 2020, based on the Strat-O-Matic simulation. Riz & The Dawg broke down the surprsingly compact seven-game Friday slate in depth just as if it had happened on a real field and not a digital one. They gave some good inside stuff for the Strat-Heads as always, and injected some humor into the mix as we sit in our homes and deal with the effects of the Coronavirus. Dawg even talked about the possibility he might join Twitter (pro tip: you can actually find him on the Facebook Group).
