Hi there! Welcome back to the Pro Painter Podcast. Today, Nick May sits down with… actually there’s no guest this week. Don’t worry, nobody bailed on us. This week we bring you a Nick May solo episode. Nick is all about connecting with people, and guiding painters on how to do business. You know one of his many mottos: “elevate the trade.” One way in which he carries that out is through the Business Brush group on Facebook, where painting business owners share experiences and learn from each other. Today Nick goes over one of the member’s posts, and helps us explore the concept of value proposition. What does the customer care about? What should you as a business owner care about? What type of customers do you want to work with?

Welcome back to the Pro Painter Podcast! Today, we are pleased to have our dear friend Jaime Rowe back once again! Through her company Impact To Income, Jaime guides female business owners to refine their sales structure and boost their confidence. She designs sales processes around women’s strengths – creativity, problem-solving, compassion, and many more – that allow saleswomen to be comfortable in their field. Jaime and Nick share some of their entrepreneurial wisdom, focusing on 3 specific points: delegating duties to others, understanding the value of your work, and working with relatives. You might have heard these a few times before, but it’s important to keep them in mind. At the end of the day, what matters is that you are happy with your business, and happy in your business.

Welcome back to the Pro Painter Podcast! Same great content with a brand-new coat of paint and a few extra treats here and there. This week, Nick May chats with Bill Ferst, owner of First Place Painting in Pennsylvania! Bill was previously featured in our Getting to a Million episode, where he and other painters shared their stories on how they took their businesses to the next level. The hustle doesn’t end, however; it’s a non-stopping grind to keep a healthy flow of work, customers, and employees. Even as a successful business owner, systems and processes can continue to evolve. You can still save time and automate procedures. You can still delegate tasks to others. And of course, there’s always room for personal development too.

Hosted by Nick May w/ guest Doug Hershberger

Hello and welcome to the Pro Painter Podcast! This week, Nick invites Doug Hershberger from Sarasota, Florida. Doug’s painting roots come from his father. Growing up he did occasional painting jobs, although he pursued a professional career in Kinesiology to work as an instructor. For a few years he also worked as a school teacher. With money not being as abundant as he would’ve liked, he opened his own painting business: Hershberger Painting. His prior experience helped him get a head start by knowing what market to target in Florida.  Doug finds joy in teaching and training. All of his employees go through a thorough course on how to paint. And yes, he means all employees, even his sales people! He isn’t afraid of employees breaking out to start their own businesses. On the contrary, he encourages competition, as that makes him want to improve and elevate the trade.

Family And Business with Canadian Painter Keith Murphy of Leonard Murphy Contracting | S4E4 | Pro Painter Podcast

Hosted by Nick May w/ guest Keith Murphy

Hello and welcome to the Pro Painter Podcast! This week, Nick May chats with Keith Murphy, a painting contractor from Newfoundland, Canada! Keith worked at his father Leonard’s company while in high school and college. With Leonard slowly detaching himself from operations, Keith gradually altered processes to improve the service. Despite the business going well, working with family is often a cause for conflict. Eventually, Keith discussed with his parents, who couldn’t be happier for him wanting to go on his own. Today, Keith unofficially runs the company, and his family is closer together than ever. Instead of talking business, today we’re exploring the topic of working with close friends or relatives. While it sounds good on paper, there’s a risk of work conflict poisoning your personal interactions outside of work. If you find yourself in this situation, hopefully Keith’s story gives you the courage to end things in the best way possible as he was able to.

A Peek Into Commercial Painting With Green Pro Painting’s Greg Miller | S4E3 | Pro Painter Podcast

Hosted by Nick May w/ guest Greg Miller

Welcome back to the Pro Painter Podcast! This week, Nick May chats with Green Pro Painting‘s Greg Miller from Greenvile, South Carolina! Greg started painting at a young age, working for a cousin for several years. Over time he acquired experience in both residential and commercial painting. He finally founded his company while attending college, initially doing residential repaints and later focusing on commercial projects. Green Pro Painting has worked with companies such as BMW and Volvo! Commercial painting involves large, ambitious projects, and working with big companies. While that may sound enticing to some painters, Greg warns us to not jump head-first into it. In many ways it’s a bigger, badder beast than residential painting, and a great example of big risk, big reward. Fortunately, Greg is a risk-taker willing to share his stories of learning, success, and for good measure, mistakes.

Thanks for helping us grow our businesses!!!

I was introduced to The Business Brush podcast and Facebook group by the owner of my local Benjamin Moore retailer, who was actually featured on an episode.

After bouncing around on the podcast list to hear from people who I’ve heard of or met before, I finally decided to just play them all starting from the first season. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THIS IF YOU OWN A PAINTING COMPANY!!! I’m only partly through season 2, and I’ve already gotten so many great take-aways from some of the most successful people in the painting world.

This group is by far the most amazing place to get honest feedback from other professionals in the paint industry. I’ve been part of several other “chat rooms”/groups, and this is the best in my opinion. It’s amazing to hear advice from someone who was in my shoes 25-30 years ago, or even just yesterday, who’s willing to share their experience with no strings attached. It truly helps other business owners avoid expensive headaches, and grow their businesses quicker than they ever could on their own.

After learning about the event Nick is hosting in Denver next month, Crank 2020, I made plans to attend and I’m super excited to meet 40+ other company owners and learn more about their challenges and wins.

Keep up the awesome work, Nick! Your efforts are an amazing gift to the industry..... I can’t say thank you enough!!!
