1.1. In the Shadow of Yosemite - Part 1: Steven Stayner

1.1. In the Shadow of Yosemite - Part 1: Steven Stayner

On a cold March night in 1980, two boys, aged 14 and 5 stood outside a Ukiah police station, deciding what to do next. Local police were in the middle of a frenzied investigation into the recent abduction of 5-year-old Timmy White. They could scarcely imagine that not one, but two missing boys could stumble into their midst and, in the process, solve their own abductions. This is the story of Steven Stayner.
*** Correction: Episode audio incorrectly states that Kenneth Parnell attempted to buy a child for USD$50.00 in 2003, when the actual figure was USD$500.00.

1.2. In the Shadow of Yosemite - Part 2: Cary Stayner

This is the second part of In the Shadow of Yosemite. If you haven't listened to Part 1, go and do that now.
In March 1999, the brutal triple murders of a woman and two teenage girls rocked the small towns dotted throughout the Sierra Nevada foothills in California. The previous month, the Yosemite Valley had become the scene of a massive search and rescue operation, where hundreds of volunteers, police and friends and family searched for any sign of Carole and Juli Sund and their companion, Silvina Pelosso. Within two weeks, their case was upgraded from missing to presumed murdered. By the end of March, authorities had recovered all three bodies, and an FBI-led task force was assembled to catch those responsible. Authorities had several strong suspects in custody and were moving forward with charges, confident that they had the guilty parties behind bars. It would take another gruesome death for them to refocus their attention on the actual perpetrator. That man was Cary Stayner.
