    Both the direct fulfillment and typological fulfillment approaches are very popular. Here are some resources that are a good place to begin.

    A comprehensive typological approach to most of the messianic Psalms can be found in Richard Belcher’s The Messiah and the Psalms.

    For direct fulfillment:

    * Derek Kidner’s Psalms 1-72 and Psalms 73-150. Kidner sees some typology, but in the case of Psalm 22 for example, he sees it directly speaking of Jesus.

    For prosopological fulfillment:

    * Patrick Henry Reardon’s Christ in the Psalms.

    To learn more, consider the following resources:

    For historical fulfillment, there are many critical commentaries. John Goldingay’s set contains very good scholarship that nonetheless argues that the NT authors misinterpret the Psalms.

    * John Goldingay: Psalms 1-41; Psalms 42-72; Psalms 73-150

    For allegorical fulfillment, the early church provides many examples:

    * Psalms 1-50 and Psalms 51-150 in the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture series.

    To learn more, consider the following resources:

    * David C. Mitchell’s The Message of the Psalter for a fantastic survey of how the Psalms were interpreted throughout history.

    * Robert Jewett: “David, ‘Being Therefore a Prophet…’ (Acts 2:30).” The Catholic Biblical Quarterly 34.

    * Matthew Bates’ The Birth of the Trinity for a dense but important study on how the apostles found Jesus in the OT.

    Is the Psalter merely a collection of ancient worship songs? If that is so, why have most Jews and Christians throughout history interpreted the Psalms as prophetic?

    As far as I know, David C. Mitchell’s The Message of the Psalter gives the best historical survey of how the Psalms were interpreted throughout history.
