    Grandpa Ivy & the Wool

    Grandpa Ivy & the Wool

The first week of every month, we hear a Grandpa Ivy story during Storytime. Today's story is by Becca Lane.

Grandpa Ivy is watching sheep graze in the meadow by his house when he notices they are leaving little tufts of wool behind as they move through the meadow. There are little white dots here and there on the grass blades, bushes, and low-hanging branches! Grandpa Ivy collects the little bits of wool and brings them inside where he uses soap, hot water, and a lot of hard work to make a little square of felt. He then leaves the felt to dry outside in the sun. A little mouse finds it and thinks it would make the perfect blanket for the cold days of winter and gratefully takes it home with him.

    The Clay Pot

    The Clay Pot

A series of animals find a clay pot resting in the meadow. They crawl inside to relax and eventually the pot is squished full of forest friends. That’s when the bear arrives and finds there isn’t room for him. This upsets the bear. He isn’t sure what to do with his upset and he uses his paw to hit the clay pot and send it rolling down the mountain into the forest. Once the pot comes to a stop, the forest animals find themselves surrounded by tall trees and there is a little hut close by. They decide to work together to make this place their home. The bear soon arrives with a heart-felt apology and desire to do better. They invite him to join their group and they all work together on their new forest home.

    The Lantern

    The Lantern

This is a sweet tale from France that is appropriate to tell when the nights are long and dark. In this story, a little girl is carrying a lantern to light her path when the wind blows it out. She asks several animals and people to help her relight her lantern but none can help. Instead, she climbs the mountain to find Father Sun and asks him for his help. He has been watching her and comes down and relights her lantern. She then returns down the path, sharing her light with all the animals and humans she sees along the way.

    Little Mouse's New House

    Little Mouse's New House

This week is our monthly pedagogical tale. Pedagogical tales are “teaching tales” that are intended to prepare a child for a transition or address a challenging behavior. This story helps prepare a child for a move to a new home.

Little Mouse’s family needs to find a new house, and Little Mouse is worried that they won’t find a house before winter comes. He is worried he won’t like his new home as much. He is also very worried he won’t see his favorite toys or his little stuffed bear ever again. Little Mouse is worried about moving! Little Mouse’s parents let him know that Mother Earth is caring for them and watching over them and will make sure they have a comfortable home before winter comes.

A House for the Sun's Spark

A House for the Sun's Spark

A little girl notices the days are shortening and she wonders how she will enjoy the colder, darker days ahead. Father Sun comes out from behind the clouds to let the girl know that during the colder and darker days, she must tend to her spark within. The little girl doesn’t think she will remember when there is darkness all around her. Father Sun tells her he will share one of his sparks with her if she will build a safe house for it. This spark can serve as a reminder to tend her own light during the dark months ahead. The little girl works hard to create a beautiful lantern. She presents it to Father Sun who gives her a spark to tend all winter long.

Note: This week we don’t hear our pedagogical story as usual. Since November 11 is the traditional day for a Lantern Walk (also known as Martinmas in the Waldorf tradition), we are sharing a lantern walk story this week. Our pedagogical story is next week instead.

    Grandpa Ivy & the Hedgehogs

    Grandpa Ivy & the Hedgehogs

The first week of each month, we hear a story about Grandpa Ivy. He is a kind soul who lives by a river in rural southern Appalachia. No one is sure how old he is and some suspect he might be a gnome… In this week’s story Grandpa Ivy wakes to the smell of frost in the air and realizes he needs to finish harvesting his vegetable garden. After spending much of the day working, he takes a break to have some tea before he finishes harvesting. Then he falls asleep sitting on his porch! He sleeps until the sun starts to set and the hedgehogs who live across the creek wake up for the night. They see Grandpa Ivy hasn’t finished harvesting his vegetables and they know a frost is coming. They work together to harvest the rest of the garden for him and, when doing so, find a rather large pumpkin--too large to move. So they decide to leave it in the garden and use it as their home that winter! Today’s Purple Day Podcast is the audio from our Monday Storytime video.
