Innocent and Imprisoned, Does the Criminal Justice System Really Work with Professor Justin Brooks

Innocent and Imprisoned, Does the Criminal Justice System Really Work with Professor Justin Brooks

Todays’ Quantum Revolution podcast is a little different than some of our previous episodes.  We usually focus on the relationship between science and spirituality.
This season we have expanded our carefully curated group of guests to include other kinds of Quantum Revolutionaries.  From innovative social activists like Frank Schaeffer, to experts leading the charge on criminal justice reform, like today’s guest, Justin Brooks.
In this episode we’re going to look at the judicial system and explore the question, what happens when you’re imprisoned for a crime you didn’t commit - and is the penal system actually fulfilling its purpose of rehabilitation and equitable punishment?
When confronting outdated and discriminatory systems, it requires creativity to find the solutions that work within the confines of a dysfunctional system and eventually discovering the solutions to transforming the system into something more equitable and sustainable.  Today’s guest, Justin Brooks, is the embodiment of this kind of disruptive and compassionate creativity.
We can’t transform the criminal justice system if we’re not taking a realistic look at what is actually happening.  If the goal of the criminal justice system is to rehabilitate people, we’re failing.
Decades of research have shown that prison is the least effective place to rehabilitate offenders. Studies have indicated that a stint in prison increases the likelihood that inmates will reoffend.  Many inmates start off as young offenders who are deeply traumatized and become more traumatized by a system that clearly does not work.
What would a just judiciary system look like?  How could we better rehabilitate people who commit crimes so that they can be reintroduced back into society as healed individuals?  How do we tackle racism in the current system?  These are the questions we must be asking as a society.
We might not have the answer to these questions yet, but it’s time we start imagining new possibilities.  And then taking the incremental steps as they appear in front of us.
One step you can take today is to visit californiainnocenceproject.org and make a donation.  Your contribution is used to help innocent people get off death row.
Justin Brooks is the Director and Co-Founder of the California Innocence Project. He has practiced as a criminal defense attorney in Washington D.C., Michigan, and Illinois. Over the course of his career he has served as counsel on several high-profile criminal cases, including the Brian Banks case which was the subject of an award winning movie, Brian Banks, in 2018.
Since 1999, Professor Brooks has also worked extensively in Latin America. He is the Founder and Director of California Western’s Latin American Institute for Law and Justice, an organization devoted to training law students and lawyers in Latin America and improving justice systems. He is also the Founder and Director of Red Inocente, an organization devoted to starting and supporting innocence organizations throughout Latin America.
He has been recognized several times by the Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California. In 2010 and 2012, California Lawyer Magazine recognized him with the “Lawyer of the Year” award.
Justin has dedicated most of his professional - and personal - life to overturning wrongful convictions.  His passion has spurred him to create Innocence Projects all over the world and to train young lawyers to work to help free innocent people and transform the judicial system.

The Beginning of the New Year: Unifying our Minds and Building our New World, Together with Karen Curry Parker

The Beginning of the New Year: Unifying our Minds and Building our New World, Together with Karen Curry Parker

This week, as we prepared to finish production on our interview with Dr. Amit Goswami and Dr. Valentina Onisor, we discovered that our online recording platform failed to save a portion of our inspiring conversation.

I thought I’d pivot with grace in response to this frustrating twist in the plot outline.  Certainly, if I’ve learned anything these past few years, it’s that change always brings with it an opportunity for something different - often something better.  Resistance only leads to exhaustion.  Being in the flow - and grateful even when it seems difficult in the beginning - creates room for true innovation.

So, in honor of this collective experience of transformation, I thought this week we’d do something a little different.

I have decided to present a special release of the latest episode from our companion microcast, Cosmic Revolution. As we begin the New Year, we are sharing with you our vision of the future and how we can unify our minds and build our new world, together.
We have to work with what IS working.  And let the rest unfold.
So far this season we’ve heard from many leading-edge scientists and creators such as Dr. Ervin Lazslo, who talked about cycles of disruption being cataclysmic and vital for big leaps in evolution.  We’ve explored the idea that the Universe is inherently biased toward evolution, unity, and coherence.
We’ve talked about how vital it is to reframe the narrative of our future, how moving past old traumas and finding healthy perspectives can actually help us heal and increase our capacity to tap into higher states of well-being that can last a lifetime.
We’ve looked at the need for rest and respite as essential elements of sustaining our creative edge.  We’ve learned about why curiosity and wonder are essential elements in uncovering the elegant solutions to the challenges facing humanity today.
Cycles of disruption have – well – disruption as an inherent element.  These past few years have given us an entire curriculum on navigating the skillset of pivoting and discovering resiliency in the face of the unexpected.
This week I leave you with an auditory dream.  A journey for you to embark on with your imagination - a vision of what you could create on this planet, in the world, at this time.
I hope you’ll join me in co-creating this vision.  I hope you enjoy this creative dream as much as I do.

Thank you for joining us on the Quantum Revolution Podcast.  Please be sure to subscribe to this podcast on your favorite platform so you don’t miss any of the amazing shows we have in store for you.  Make sure to join us next week when we’ll be talking to Justin Brooks about his impact on our legal system.

Curiosity, Science, and the Possibility of Aliens with Dr. Avi Loeb

Curiosity, Science, and the Possibility of Aliens with Dr. Avi Loeb

    Is there life out there?
This is the question astronomers and astrophysicists have been exploring for decades.
In late 2017, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar system, moving so quickly that it could only have come from another star. Dr. Avi Loeb, Harvard’s top astronomer, showed it was not an asteroid; it was moving too fast along a strange orbit, and left no trail of gas or debris in its wake. There was only one conceivable explanation: the object was a piece of advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization.
In today’s conversation we’re exploring the question, is there life out there? with Dr. Loeb, who is the Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of Science at Harvard University, chair of Harvard’s Department of Astronomy, founding director of Harvard’s Black Hole Initiative, and director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (ITC) within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
In Dr. Loeb’s new book, Extraterrestrial, the First Signs of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth, we learn about Oumuamua, the first known interstellar object detected passing through the Solar System.
But this book isn’t really about Oumuamua.  It’s a story about why curiosity is essential to science and how curiosity gets squelched when the scientific process is influenced by the pressure for research dollars.
It’s also a story about the challenge of shifting paradigms and how our first response, both in the scientific community and in the world at large is NOT to wonder and be amazed by new information, but to push new information away and to resist data - especially if the data itself defies what we think we know.
The “system” that we call science is competitive. The pressure to be first for the sake of credit, ego, and money often causes researchers to sew up conclusions in record time, without the necessary curiosity and willingness to entertain new possibilities.
New data has to stand the test of time and repetition.  It also has to be measured against what we already know with the willingness to entertain new possibilities with curiosity. A system that is run by money and the fear of losing funding perverts our interpretation of the data.
It also causes a collective lack of trust in science and increases the time it takes to implement new, innovative solutions in collective systems, such as the education or health care system.
When we liberate curiosity and knowledge from the pressure to be first or right in order to secure funding for more research, we increase the possibility that we will find the solutions to the challenges facing humanity today.
Join us as Dr. Loeb explores, with curiosity, what is out there?
Dr. Avi Loeb is the Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of Science at Harvard University. He received a PhD in Physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel at age 24 (1980-1986), led the first international project supported by the Strategic Defense Initiative (1983-1988), and was subsequently a long-term member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton (1988-1993). Loeb has written 8 books including, most recently, Extraterrestrial (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2021), and about 800 papers (with an h-index of 112) on a wide range of topics, including black holes, the first stars, the search for extraterrestrial life and the future of the Universe. He had been the longest serving Chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy (2011-2020), Founding Director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative (2016-present) and Director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (2007-present) within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics

The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma and Cancer with Dr. Eric Kuelker

The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma and Cancer with Dr. Eric Kuelker

There are an estimated 18.1 million new cancer cases globally, and cancer remains the second-leading cause of death in the United States, where more than 1.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year.
    What is cancer?
According to current medical practices, cancer begins when cells acquire the ability to grow uncontrollably and ultimately invade and damage the body’s normal tissues. Cancer development happens in multiple stages, from precancerous changes to malignant tumors.  Cancer can develop in a variety of different ways, due to a variety of different factors. Some we inherit, and others we are exposed to throughout our lives. It can be categorized into hundreds of different diseases based on the cells in which it arises.
The current medical model basically asserts that some force - a toxin in the environment, genetic predisposition or random mutation - cause the body’s cells to go haywire.
Yet, only 5-10% of cancer is caused by genetics.  Scientists argue that the number of cancer deaths due to pollutants and toxins is not as high as we might expect and lifestyle and diet also do not account for the remaining 90% of cancer.
The treatment for cancer has not really progressed in over 40 years.  We assault the sick and mutated cells with either surgery, radiation or toxic chemicals.  In a materialistic world view, it’s too easy to tackle a problem in the body with a physical solution.
We want to walk a very careful line here.  When the body has manifested the symptoms of disease, oftentimes the only course of treatment left is to physically manipulate the body.  If you have a broken leg, the most likely course of treatment is to fix the leg.  If your body has cancer, you might have to physically remove the cancer to heal the body.
But what if there’s more to this equation?  What if cancer isn’t just some random response to the environment, but also a physiological manifestation of emotional pain?
What if one of the sources of lasting emotional pain and eventually physical disease is childhood trauma?
According to this week’s Quantum Revolution guest, Dr. Eric Kuelker, the mind is the most important part of you.  That is where you experience your emotions, and it controls the rest of the body.  If your mind is healthy, then you feel great, and your body is robust.  But if you have had multiple psychological injuries, you are 5 times more likely to develop depression than someone who has had none.  You are 310% more likely to have a heart attack, and 250% more likely to develop cancer.  Psychological injuries are the single biggest cause of mental health problems, and play a huge role in 7 of the 10 causes of premature death.
Are physical injuries really the deadliest of them all?
Join us as Dr. Kuelker unpacks the science of how wounds to the mind hurt the body, and how we can achieve deep healing for both.
If there is a correlation between childhood psychological injury and physical illness, we can easily do the math to determine the short term and long term cost of not taking good care of children.  Taking good care of children and supporting parents in being able to provide a strong foundation for their family is simply a good financial decision.
But there’s another more insidious long-term cost to childhood trauma.  In our previous season of Quantum Revolution we spoke with Dr. Ervin Laszlo, a regular guest on our show, about how we literally have to be the change we want to see in the world.  When we embody a certain intention with attention, it literally causes the quantum world to organize itself in fields of information that, ultimately, manifest in the material world.
When we do not heal trauma and we embody the energy of trauma, we cause the quantum world to organize itself in fields of information that continue to manifest as trauma in the physical world.  This can literally be in the physical body or expressed in other ways in our physical reality.

Nothing quantum about this

Quantum-the smallest amount of many forms of energy
any of the very small increments or parcels into which many forms of energy are subdivided
b: any of the small subdivisions of a quantized physical magnitude (such as magnetic moment)

principles of quantum mechanics
quantum physics
The last tthing I expected was a podcast about family from what seems like an Instagram influencer

“Quantum?”

Just another charlatan (or fool? Or both?) co-opting scientific jargon in a sad attempt to legitimize her brand.
