Saturday 23rd March, 2024: A tribute to Legendary Activist for Social Justice, Phil Carswell OAM by Dr Adam Carr
Nevena and Macca are joined live in the studio by Dr Adam Carr, VAC’s original media spokesperson on the passing of Phil Carswell OAM, Thorne Harbour Health Founding President and a leader in Australia’s response to HIV and AIDS.
From an early age, Phil was an activist for social justice. He was heavily involved in the union
movement as well as the gay and lesbian liberation movement. In 1975, Phil was part of the
first National Homosexual Conference at Melbourne University. The conference went on
to be held annually in different Australian cities, including the Fourth National Homosexual
Conference in Sydney in 1978 following the first Mardi Gras. During that time, Phil was also part
of the Melbourne Gay Teachers’ Group, who notably published the booklet “Young Gay and Proud”.
In 1982, Phil was a member of the ALSO Foundation’s subcommittee on health – tasked with
gathering information about Gay Related Immune Difficiency (GRID) – or as it would be known a
year later Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
In 12 July 1983, Phil was the convenor of the Victorian AIDS Action Committee and the
organisation’s first President as it became the Victorian AIDS Council a year later. Phil went on
to serve in a number of leadership roles at both the state and federal level through the
height of the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Australia. He was a founding trustee of the AIDS Trust
of Australia. Phil successfully bridged the gap between the community and public service
sectors. Along with the late Ian Goller, Phil was the first openly gay man employed by the
Victorian Health Department to work on HIV/AIDS prevention. He served on National Advisory
Committee on AIDS alongside Ms Ita Buttrose.
Thorne Harbour Health CEO, Simon Ruth, said, “We are devastated to lose Phil. He was always
understanding, patient, and supportive of our work. He was an incredible mentor to many who
continue to carry his legacy into the work we do today.”
“Our LGBTIQ+ communities and people living with HIV will benefit from his fierce advocacy and
dedication long into the future.”
After his time in Victoria, Phil moved to Queensland where he became a signficant figure in
the Queensland HIV and LGBTIQ+ movement for another 20 years. For his outstanding service
to community health and the response to HIV/AIDS, Phil was awarded a Medal of the Order of
Australia in June 2015.
Phil is survived by his partner of 40 years, Ian Cherry, whom he married on Stonewall Day in
2013 in New York City.
Plans are underway for a memorial service in Melbourne and will be
shared online by Thorne Harbour Health. -
Saturday, 23rd March, 2024: Dechlan Brennan; Inquiry into Historical Abuse Allegations at Beaumaris Primary School
Macca and Nevena talk to Dechlan Brennan, freelance journalist, about Inquiry into historical abuse allegations at Beaumaris primary school

The Victorian education department had a “culture of covering up” allegations of historical child sexual abuse in public schools to protect reputations, an inquiry has found, describing it as an “appalling and systemic failure”.
The final report of Victoria’s special inquiry investigating historical sexual abuse at 24 state schools, tabled in parliament on Wednesday, found the department “woefully failed” to protect children between 1960 and 1994, because it had not policies in place to deal with perpetrators.
The inquiry identified 109 alleged victims of the four teachers at the centre of the allegations, the report said.
“The department failed in both its action and inaction,” the board of inquiry wrote.

Saturday, 23rd March, 2024: Misha Schubert, CEO, Super Members Council
Nevena and Macca talk to Misha Schubert, CEO, Super Members Council;
SMC is a newly formed organisation. They represent 10 million everyday Australians who hold about $1.5 trillion in savings with profit-to-member super funds. Misha is the inaugural CEO.
“Our purpose is to advocate for the interests of our 10 million members, to ensure that super policy is stable, equitable and effective.”
The Australian Government’s decision to pay super on its parental leave scheme is “a major stride
forward on gender equity” that will boost a mother of two’s retirement savings by about $14,500.
Paying super on the government parental leave scheme will benefit about 180,000 Australian mothers
each year and narrow the gender super gap, which new analysis shows is now $65,000 for those
nearing retirement.
Super Members Council CEO Misha Schubert said the Australian Government’s announcement
signals a clear intent to further improve the quality of life for all women at retirement.
“The Super Members Council (SMC) congratulates the Government for this historic decision to pay
super on Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay,” Ms Schubert said.
“This watershed reform will make a powerful difference to the lives and retirement incomes of
generations of Australian women in the decades ahead – and narrow the gender gap at retirement.”
“It will powerfully propel Australia closer towards the goal of ending the financial ‘motherhood penalty’
in the early years of having children – which has a compounding effect across women’s working lives.”
“It’s the next big step on the road to retirement gender equity – and Australia must continue to take
bold actions like this to ensure all women can have a financially secure retirement.”
Despite Australian women living on average longer than men and retiring sooner, they have about a
third less super than men as they approach retirement.
New Super Members Council analysis shows the gender super gap has narrowed for all age groups –
but women in their 30s have gone backwards – mostly due to not being paid super on parental leave.
Paying super on parental leave is a highly effective gender equity measure and could reduce the
gender gap at retirement by around a quarter. SMC estimates about 94% of the benefits accrue to
women, and about 180,000 women received Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay in 2022-23. -
