The Grand National - The story of 2024 | The Front Page | Horse Racing News

This week's edition of The Front Page is a Grand National special as Lee Mottershead, Peter Scargill and Maddy Playle combine for a comprehensive debrief of the sport's greatest race.

As well as analysing I Am Maximus's runaway success, the team debates the strengths and weaknesses of this year's contest and assesses the Grand National's future in light of a renewal in which 21 horses finished and, thankfully, none fell.

The programme also looks back at the rest of the Aintree festival and looks forward to the final two weeks of a gripping trainers' championship battle. On top of all that, there are even horses to follow for the new Flat season.

Breaking news: Jockey Club cuts prize-money after Cheltenham crowds fall

We lead with some breaking news on a packed show this week in which Racing Post editor Tom Kerr is joined by West Country correspondent James Stevens and deputy Ireland editor David Jennings.

Kicking us off is a breaking story about Jockey Club prize-money cuts following a fall in Cheltenham Festival attendance that compounded the impact of affordability checks on betting turnover. We look at what it means for racing and where the sport goes from here.

The panel then turns to Aintree and Saturday's Grand National, with all the big talking points assessed including the paucity of the home challenge, impact of likely heavy ground, an enthralling trainers' title race and the panel's tips for the National.

Finally, we look at a couple of sad stories reminding us of the dangers jockeys face every day. Stefano Cherchi, just 23, tragically died following a fall in Canberra, while Aidan Coleman announced his retirement aged 35 following serious knee injuries.

Betting bombshell strengthens case against affordability checks | The Front Page | Horse Racing News

Reflections on a huge day of top international competition, analysis of grim financial figures for British racing and discussions on three important regulatory decisions are on the table in this week's edition of The Front Page.

Scott Burton is back home after working at Meydan, where there were some stunning winning performances on World Cup night but also another case of Auguste Rodin completely failing to fire. The panel looks at what that means for his reputation and what lessons can be learned from the Dubai action.

The Flat season might be kicking into gear but the jumps campaign is anything but over, with thoughts now turning to the Randox Grand National. Defending champion and ante-post favourite Corach Rambler is set to be ridden as usual by Derek Fox after Lucinda Russell's jockey survived a meeting of the BHA's Whip Review Committee. We look at Fox's case and those relating to Tony Martin and Gary Sanderson.

The programme ends with Bill Barber's revelation that online betting turnover on racing fell by the equivalent of £1.75 billion in the last financial year, wiping tens of millions from the sport's media rights deals. The team argues that the scary figures hammer home why the government has to think again about affordability checks.
