    #72: Nick Uricchio — Semente Surfboards Co-Founder on Surfing in Portugal

    Nick Uricchio is the Co-Founder of Semente Surfboards.  Nick grew up in Connecticut and moved out to California when he was 10. At 15 in high school he started surfing with friends at Huntington Beach. After finishing school in 78 Nick took off backpacking around Europe. The last stop of the trip he found himself in Lisbon, Portugal. His rail pass had ran out and the uncrowded waves lured him to stay in Carcavelos for a few months.

    In 1980 Nick moved to Costa da Caparica close to Lisbon with António Pereira Caldas they started Lipsticks Surfboards one of the first surfboard manufacturers in Portugal. 2 years later he partnered with his good friend Miguel Katzenstein to create Semente Surfboards. The plan was all about lifestyle and surfing the best waves in the country. So they set up shop in the surf mecca of Ericeira. The rest is history. Nick went on to become one of the most successful shapers in Portugal. Working with the best surfers in the country as well as top pro surfers passing through.

    Chris Burkard is an award-winning photographer, film director, speaker and adventurer. Chris grew up in Central California and was immersed in surf culture from a young age. He started documenting his friends on surf trips up and down the coast. Interning at Transworld Surfing Magazine, living in his van before it was trendy and known as 'Van Life' he learnt a lot about hard work and persistence as a photographer.

    Chris would later go on surf exploration trips for magazines to far-flung lands. Known for his photographic style of powerful landscapes. Chris has shot campaigns for Fortune 500 clients, amassed millions of followers on social media, produced numerous films, published books and inspired people to explorer nature.

    Darren Kinnaird is the Managing Director at Crankworx and Board Director at Freeride Mountain Bike Association. Darren moved to Whistler in 1999 with a passion for skiing. In 2005 he ended up volunteering for Crankworx. Darren later took over sponsorship for Crankworx and the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. In 2010 he was asked to become the General Manager. It was his dream job and he has remained in the role for over a decade.

    #69: Mike Rogers — Grind for Life Founder on Surviving Cancer and Skateboarding

     Mike Rogers is a life-long skateboarder,  two time cancer survivor and Founder of Grind for Life. Mike was diagnosed with cancer when he was just 12 years old. It was a sarcoma and he had to undertake 18 rounds of Chemotherapy.

    Mike beat cancer, working as the Skate Park Director at YMCA Palm Springs Florida when his tumor came back 25 years later in 2003. He underwent a 17 hour surgical procedure to remove the cancer to save his life. He used all his money and a retirement fund on his treatment. They put on a skateboarding benefit called Grind for Life to help Mike get back on his feet. The idea was born to set up Grind for Life as a fund raising event series to help people with travel expenses to get to their cancer treated.

    #68: JJ Thomas — From Pro Snowboarder to Snowboarding Coach

    JJ Thomas is a former pro snowboarder, Olympic bronze medalist and the US Snowboarding Halfpipe Team Coach. JJ started his career as a professional snowboarder and at 15 was the youngest ever sponsored pro rider. He went on to represent the US in snowboarding taking a bronze medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. After the Games he focused on freeriding and film parts to then return to competition a few years later.

    An accident lead him to think about his next career move. Pro rider Louie Vito asked JJ to coach him and the rest is history. He went on to be the private coach for Shaun White helping him win his 3rd Olympic Gold Medal in Halfpipe. After 10 years in coaching JJ is preparing the US snowboarding team for Winter Games Beijing 2022.

    Jeremy Vest is the Chief Marketing Officer at Braille Skateboarding. He started skateboarding back in 1986. Rad Season is a Top Notch Podcast

I recently discovered the Rad Season Podcast on LinkedIn, and I’m super stoked that I did. I’ve seen a few episodes now and really enjoyed them. Terrific back and forth banter with excellent questions and interview skills by Oli, who keeps the conversation flowing and gets the most out of his guests, who seem genuinely happy to be there. Great stories, history, and personal insight into all your favorite action sports. I highly recommend it.
