One of the greatest impacts on a person’s lifelong wellbeing is how their health is nurtured during childhood. At our kids’ most malleable time of life, the choices we make as parents influence how their bodies and brains grow and function for the rest of their lives. The habits and attitudes they develop in turn affect not only them, but also have implications for the health of their communities and the planet as a whole.

Just as a tree is most resilient in its natural setting, surrounded by ideal amounts of light, water, healthy soil, and in relationship with other plants and animals, our kids are healthiest when our parenting is as closely aligned with nature as possible. Sometimes that can be tricky. It can feel like we’re rowing against a cultural current of messages that cause us to question our intuition. In a world that prioritizes many things other than good health, we hope this podcast will be a salve that helps you remember that how you raise your kids will have the biggest impact on their health and the health of the rest of the planet.

With honesty, humour and compassion, Dr. Leslie Solomonian, a naturopathic doctor, will help you explore how your kids' health and wellbeing reciprocally intersect with the health of their communities and the planet, and offer practical strategies to optimize both.

Raising Kids, Naturally is a part of the EcoParent Podcast Network: https://www.ecoparent.ca/podcasts

    About the Episode

In this episode, Leslie explores what “good” education is, and what gets in the way. Longtime alternative/holistic/unconventional educators Marla Renn and Monica Cochran school her (see what we did there?) on principles of meaningful (and joyful!) learning, how typical educational values and institutions interfere with them, and how adults can nurture a love of lifelong learning in kids. There may just be a tidbit in there for the grown-ups too!

    Guest Bio & Links

Marla is an educator that has worked in a variety of learning environments including conventional, democratic freerange, learner designed and led projects, and joyful anarchist models. She is most interested in collaborating in meaningful ways with others through the disruptive forces of fully self-expressed people and communities, in order to create a world we all want to live in. She is a settler and grateful to the Coast Salish Peoples who have, for thousands of years, tended to and walked gently upon the beautiful unceded traditional territories she now calls home. Her happiest places include being in the ocean, hanging out with trees, and cooking.

Monica Cochran is passionate about nurturing the love of learning and has vast experience in helping learners of all ages enjoy learning. Working locally in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area and virtually (online), all over the world, she especially enjoys helping learners who have unique talents and challenges develop their strengths and learn in ways that work for them, so they can become lifelong learners and thrive in our 21st century world.

Just what I needed!

Becoming a parent has forced me to become more aware of what we eat, use, and do but it’s been overwhelming to get the right information from sources I trust. This podcast was a Godsend because it’s parents and professionals sharing what has worked for them and what hasn’t. Information is backed up by research but also anecdotes and gut checks. I’ve learned so much since subscribing and look forward to each new episode.
