Raising Kids to Follow Christ with Chris Sasser Raising Sinners

    • Parenting

We can’t begin to tell you how much we enjoyed our conversation with Chris Sasser.  Chris has been around kids for a while now, serving as youth pastor for many years and now as pastor of Family Ministries at Port City Community Church in Wilmington, NC.  Whether it’s his own kids or a student at the church, he sees up close and personal what kids are up against today and how many are struggling with identity.  Aren’t we all? The world is telling us one thing, we’re struggling to believe what God’s word says about us.  And the cycle continues.

For all of us raising our children, the end goal is for them to have their own faith.  We pray what we teach them about God will “stick.” Right? We pray they make their faith their own.

If you are a parent “in the game” raising your children, you will want to grab a pen and take notes! Chris is full of wisdom.  He’s so easy to talk to and making a big impact in his own family and in the lives of those around him.

We asked him to give us strategies for teaching our kids to love God with their whole heart.  Here’s what he had to say:

#1 – Pursue a relationship first and foremost.  Strive for CONNECTION over CONTENT.  Don’t be so focused on teaching your kids something if you’ve never connected with them.  They need to know how much you care before they know how much you know.

#2 – Model authentic faith.  Be the same person on Sunday that you are on Thursday.

#3 – Surround them with other adults/role models pursuing Christ, e.g. In the church, camp, etc.

#4 – Give them time on their time.  Be available when they need you and want to talk.  Play when they want to play.  This is a short season.  Be available.

#5 – Trust and pray.  “Parenting without prayer is the highest form of arrogance.” We must trust God and pray that they will surrender their hearts and lives to Christ.

We also asked Chris to share one FINAL piece of advice.  Well, you’ll have to listen in to find out what that advice is but let us just tell you it’s easy and hard at the same time.  And it’s pure gold.  Listen in!
