Meeting patients where they are, but where to from there? Exploring patient and practitioner agendas.

Meeting patients where they are, but where to from there? Exploring patient and practitioner agendas.

So you've followed the advice of 'meeting the patient where they are'. But what do you do from there?

Too often we hear practitioners following this advice, understanding the current patient's situation, health literacy and goals, but then try and take them on a journey that makes to them, not their patient... defeating the purpose of the exercise!

In this months episode, Alex and Kit discuss this common advice and explore how despite this starting point and how the difference in patient and practitioner agenda can still be a source of conflict and misunderstanding when it comes to providing care.

They explore how traditional models of care can favour the practitioner's agenda, how this can impact and alienate patients from care and lead to poorer outcomes.

They also discuss psychological frameworks such as self-determination theory and acceptance and commitment therapy which helps explain why and how being attentive to the patient's agenda and suspending our own agenda and biases, can help us create treatment plans that meet the patient and practitioner's goals!
