Johana Orellana: Striving for Greatness and sharing her #MejorContigo, Better with You, journey.

Johana Orellana immigrated to this country when she was 9 years old from El Salvador. As a young girl she had aspirations of having a career in a leadership role. Becoming a young mom at 19, detoured her path but gave her a new perspective. She could be a great mom and show her daughter that she could still be successful in her career. She had the opportunity to start her Walmart career as a temporary associate supporting the Health and Wellness Center. Fast forward 7 years later, Johana is a senior project manager and has participated in various volunteer type roles that have become second nature. She currently co-leads the LatinX Network Connect Pillar for the 2nd year in a row. She also leads a cross-functional team of associates from Walmart Store Ops, Merchandising, and Technology.

Johana is currently back in school due to Walmart’s Live Better U program. Under the program, Walmart subsidizes the cost of higher education, beyond financial aid and an associate contribution equal to $1 a day, removing barriers to college enrollment and graduation. Walmart stands for the Hispanic pursuit of a better life by helping create a stable foundation and by removing obstacles from their path, demonstrating that we are #MejorContigo, we are truly better together. I am truly inspired by Johana’s drive and determination and look forward to sharing her journey with all of you.

    Key Takeaways

Johana shares her story and her background. Johana set a 5-year plan that if she wasn’t happy, she had to go somewhere else. Well, 7 years later, and she’s still going strong in her career It is so hard to go back to school as a single mom that’s also working full time. She has an accountability partner to help her keep going.  Education is important. You have to keep learning to continue to be a good leader for others.  Johana shares the important work she’s been doing within the LatinX community. 47% of the participants in the Live Better U are associates of color. Walmart is hyper focused in delivering tools to underserved communities.

Shannon Kane: Following My Own Path

Shannon Kane: Following My Own Path

Shannon Kane is a friend, mother, entrepreneur and an American actress best known for her roles on ABC’s All My Children, Hollywood Heights, and her breakout role in the film Brooklyn’s Finest. She is currently starring on UMC’s new six part psychological thriller, Terror Lake Drive. Shannon and I became fast friends when we played opposite each other as love interests on the daytime drama All My Children over 10 years ago. Extremely passionate about self-care, Shannon recently started a new crystal infused plant-based skincare line called Anointed Co, where she and her sister create 100% organic, vegan & additive free natural products. Shannon is full of positive energy and light, living her truth unapologetically every day. I can’t wait for you to learn more about her unique journey in today’s episode!

    Key Takeaways
J.R. and Shannon reminisce about working together on All My Children. Shannon was raised by two beautiful women, which was controversial at the time, living in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Shannon grew up as an only child and interacted a lot with adults as a kid which forced her to grow up quickly. How did Shannon become an actress?  Shannon believes in something bigger than herself. “If you believe in the negative opinion of others, then that’s all you will think you’re capable of” Shannon struggled growing up as a mixed race child. She was too white for the black kids and too black for the white kids. She didn’t feel like she fit in.  When J.R. worked with Shannon, he was a bit intimidated at first, but she was always humble and kind to him. Why did Shannon and her sister create the skincare line, Anointed Co?   What is motherhood like for Shannon especially as a single mom? Look out for Terror Lake Drive streaming now on UMC.

David Shurna & Tom Lillig — What’s Within You Is Stronger Than What’s In Your Way

David Shurna & Tom Lillig — What’s Within You Is Stronger Than What’s In Your Way

David Shurna and Tom Lillig co-authored the book, What’s Within You: Your Roadmap to Living Life with No Barriers and they both co-founded, No Barriers USA. David is also the Executive Director and Tom is the Director of Account Management and the Board President. Their start goes back 17 years ago when the two of them decided it was time to create an organization that had a profound impact on the lives of others and the ability to shift one’s life path forever. There are no barriers to what you want to achieve. Find out more about David & Tom in this week’s episode!

    Key Takeaways
Why did David & Tom write a book? “It’s part of being human to struggle. We all have experienced it.” What inspired David & Tom to start no barriers 17 years ago? J.R. is featured in this book! “What’s in you is stronger, way stronger, than what’s in your way” J.R. remembers meeting with a blind boy who had such a unique outlook on life and how he believed his blindness was the best thing to happen to him! Everything in life starts with a vision, but what do David & Tom mean by this? “In times of great darkness, the vision you have is what will fuel you through.” Just being able to open up and share the struggles you’re going through, and finding out others feel the same, really helps build connection and community in profound ways. Give someone a powerful moment that they can point back to and an ability to recognize that’s what changed them as a leader. “You have to know your why. Your core why”. How can you make people feel like they matter? Not everyone is going to elevate the world and start a great non-profit, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be incredibly passionate about the world we’re building and the roles we’re in. What makes effective teams?  The ability to be vulnerable is a key to having people feel safe and like they matter.

Dan Vargas: The Greatest Tool Out There Is Love

Who has helped you become the person you are today? For me, it’s been Daniel E. Vargas. He served 20 years in the United States Air Force and served in Desert Storm. After retiring from the military, he transitioned into the nonprofit world and has dedicated himself to helping veterans. He found me two years after my injury and the rest is history. He was the first person in my life that made it okay for me to cry in front of someone else and be able to express to another man that I loved them.
