Episode 327 - Murder in Ulvila

Episode 327 - Murder in Ulvila

At 3 am on the 1st of December 2006, Anneli Auer phoned Finnish emergency services – to tell them an intruder was stabbing her husband to death as she spoke.

Police arrived on the scene in less than 10 minutes, but it was too late, and the mysterious killer had seemingly vanished into thin air.

Judicial madness, police fuck-ups, greed, undercover lovers, Satanic child abuse rituals, DNA mix-ups, a family torn apart, and a murder mystery that divided a nation: this is the murder of Jukka Lahti, one of the most notorious cases in Finnish criminal history.

    ShortHand: Great British Cryptids

Formidable and fantastical foul-fanged creatures might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of old Blighty – but we’re here to set the record straight.

It turns out Great Britain is packed to the brim with many a cryptid (Briptid…?), from a half-man-half-pig roaming the Midlands, to big cats stalking the suburbs, we Brits have plenty of creepy creatures to offer.

ShortHand: Phone Hacking & News International

ShortHand: Phone Hacking & News International

Murdered schoolgirls, victims of terrorist attacks, the Royal Family – no one was safe from News International.

While invading privacy is hardly a tabloid taboo, the level to which Rupert Murdoch’s media machine was willing to snoop is somehow still shocking. This week’s ShortHand is everything you need to know about the culture of bribery and phone hacking which propped up a ‘Golden Age’ of tabloid news.

Episode 325 - The Vanishing of Lynette Dawson - Part 2

Episode 325 - The Vanishing of Lynette Dawson - Part 2

The evidence against Chris Dawson was overwhelming from the start - so why did it take several investigations, 2 coronial enquiries and 40 years of agony for Lyon’s family for New South Wales police to even make an arrest?

In our final episode on the murder of Lynette Dawson we discuss the day of her disappearance and the unfathomable lack of effort put into finding her. Not to mention why the police were so unwilling to investigate a man several officers referred to lovingly as ‘Dawso’.

Best in the biz

Excellent EXCELLENT true crime podcast. Absolutely the best research—no question—with two of the smartest hosts. Brilliant.

Love from the USA—thank you for introducing me to so many new/international/under-reported cases.

Soldiers are serial killers

I just listened to epis 215 on Robert Bales where Hannah said, “the only difference between soldiers and serial killers is serial killers take trophies.” Unbelievable, I have 3 sons in the military including one in the Air Force that just received a medal. They are all stationed in the US and have never engaged in battle how can she make such a sweeping statement? There are approximately 1.4 million soldiers in the US, are they all serial killers even if they have never hurt anyone? What about the soldiers that landscape, push paperwork or cook meals? I have supported this podcast since they started. No longer.

Used to be a fan

I’ve liked this show in the past, but it just a seems weird to speak about the Obsessed Fest drama behind a paywall and saying “Can someone even be verbally accosted?”. Just seems strange to me as crime podcasters to not understand verbal assault and talk bad about one of the parties involved. Such a shame because I really did like their show but the opinions seemed off and mean spirited to me. They use “but” quite a lot.
