47 episodes

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home.

On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers.

Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks.

Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.

River Cafe Table 4: Danny Huston

River Cafe Table 4: Danny Huston

In front of the camera and behind, Danny Huston has spent his life in movies. Danny, son of John Huston, grew up watching rushes, travelling to film locations, and meeting all the great actors. Later directing, producing and acting in films and television series: Mr North, Fade to Black, The Constant Gardener, Succession and much more. I knew Danny loves food, but nothing could have impressed me more than when, of all The River Cafe recipes, he chose, toast. Toast - or rather as the Italians call it bruschetta - was what made me want to cook Italian food when I first tasted it in Florence in 1971. Danny and I had much to discuss as we sat together in the River Cafe. On Episode 44 of River Cafe Table 4, Danny and I spoke about food, music, family, cooking, travelling – and more. River Cafe Table 4: Valerie Biden Owens

River Cafe Table 4: Valerie Biden Owens

Valerie Biden Owen’s family are typical Americans in some ways, but not that typical. Her brother Joe is the President of the United States.  In today's River Cafe Table 4 she and Ruthie will be talking about food and family, from the kitchen table of her childhood home to the White House dining room and Air Force One. For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. River Cafe Table 4: Darren Walker

River Cafe Table 4: Darren Walker

Recently a friend led me across a crowded room with the words—“Talk to this man about food; he is passionate!” So, I did  - and put away all my questions about the dynamic, social and radical philanthropic work that Darren Walker does as CEO of the Ford Foundation. After 10 minutes of stories and memories of his childhood and the food he ate in Lafayette, Louisiana, I asked him to pause suggesting we do this on River Cafe Table 4. And here we are — in the restaurant ready to carry on the conversation.

River Cafe Table 4: Josh Berger

River Cafe Table 4: Josh Berger

When Ruthie was asked to debut a live podcast, her first call was to Josh Berger. In his thirty years at Warner Bros. UK, Josh gave audiences some of Hollywood’s greatest movies – Harry Potter, A Star is Born, and The Hangover and with his role as chairman of the British Film Institute he helped make London a city of movie-goers and moviemakers. On Broadway he co-produced the Tony Award–winning musical Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations. Ruthie and Josh talking about food in his life with a live audience at the Cannes Lions festival is a great conversation - and a great debut.

River Cafe Table 4: Austin Butler

River Cafe Table 4: Austin Butler

My favourite line in this conversation from our 41st episode of River Cafe Table 4, is Austin Butler saying he and I are ‘family’. Austin arrived straight from playing Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s movie ‘Elvis’ in January 2021 and we met soon after. London was just out of a COVID lockdown and, needing an immediate tradition, we decided to have dinner at my home every Sunday night with the same small group of friends. Austin would arrive early and cook with me, and this is what we did, every Sunday, for 39 weeks. Austin is a brilliant actor, a beautiful singer, a poet, and an extraordinary friend.

Table Four River Cafe

Nothing like it. Personal and passionate conversations about food, family, growing up and restaurants, led by Ruthie Rogers, an engaging, non-fawning host, who seems to have the ability to get celebrities to shed the artificial and get real.
