Very interesting, more hits than misses

Yup, she mainly talks about people that she thinks are guilty, and she usually backs up her opinions. This is a flaw, but it is also a breath of fresh air to the “no one is guilty” atmosphere these days. I was very pleasantly surprised. The guests are good, the quality is very professional, no time is wasted on empty banter. The one star reviews are obviously from people who are devoted to one project or another. The podcaster and I differ politically, but that’s not a problem - you don’t have to adopt all of her opinions. She talks to anyone relevant to her pet cases.

Claims not supported with evidence

This show is just opinions instead of claims being supported with a variety of evidence. They assume their opinions count as evidence?? Just because they say something they think doesn’t make it true. It’s also clear in many episodes they don’t fully understand the cases they are talking about which is embarrassing for this show.

Cool jey ,

Unlike any other podcasts out there

This podcast is definitely worth a listen. I don’t think every episode deserves a 5 star rating - some are hard to follow if you don’t know the case and the quality is varied between episodes - BUT I am giving Roberta 5 stars to make up for some bad reviews here - she brings up some really important points that I haven’t heard anyone else discuss considering the boom in popular media and culture in overturning ‘wrongful convictions’. I don’t agree with all her politics or all her views about the criminal justice system but she absolutely has valid points I have not heard before.

She does know *the facts* of cases at the level of court & trial documents and she’s letting an audience know that some convenient things are often left out of these documentary narratives. Sure, she also has opinions that don’t have relevance to the guilt or innocence of a person, but people seem to think this is unique to her and not done on ALL other true crime stories. When people are trying to figure out motive (which is never required to convict someone) people like to speculate and talk about behavior and personality - you may not agree w/Roberta’s opinion on a particular observation but if you think a documentary maker is not doing the same thing, you aren’t paying attention! But I still find that she also knows the actual evidence on cases from trials and court documentation (and this is available to anyone who wants to take the time to do it). You don’t have to actually agree with her assessment of a particular case to understand a broader point being made.

What Roberta does well is point out the motives and formulas of popular true crime pods/documentaries. These tactics should make people more skeptical of what is being presented (and what is being left out). She points to the money and the PR involved in these media campaigns as well as orgs like the Innocence Project(s). I think this is all helpful as our politics seem to make any topic go to extremes these days and it’s quite possible people are now searching for the next wrongfully convicted person for the wrong reasons. It’s easy to get people sympathetic to the idea of someone being wrongfully convicted so the formula works well. I don’t doubt there are wrongfully convicted people, but we shouldn’t take the word of one highly produced documentary followed by glowing media coverage to form our opinions. One tragic result of some of these stories is how little the victims are mentioned.

I would start with episode “Making a killing..” (9/24/2020) with Gary meece as I think it’s a good overview of what happens in some of these cases. There was a clever point on the common narrative of state/prosecutorial power but we don’t talk about the power, money and cronyism behind overturned convictions. They talk about some popular cases and the role of journalism, politics and PR firms. I also liked this episode as it was a bit more structured (and the sound quality better!)

Other things I think would help this podcast is to either: -do overview episodes on the cases often discussed (and link to them in episodes about same case) -OR alternatively give an overview of case before getting into it with a guest. I really can’t follow the episodes when it is an unfamiliar case and even when I do know something about the case, I usually only know the mainstream narrative! Nothing too detailed but tell me about the murder, the overview/timeline of court case and why/when the case was overturned/person released plus the strongest evidence for why you think they are guilty. A bit more structure with some guests would be good as well.
