    1% - How to start a niche podcast that people love

    1% - How to start a niche podcast that people love

    Rose, how do you start a podcast? What did you do?

    In this episode, I tell you. I answer five questions about starting a podcast asked by members of my community:

    What time and resources do you need to commit to your podcast initially? And what about now that you do it more regularly?

    How do we decide upon our target audience? There are so many possibilities that people can pursue with their time. How do we get their attention? Should that be our goal, or perhaps just to put out what we believe in and see what happens?

    What tech do you use? Should we use video?

    What post production do you do and how do you get it done? Do you do it yourself or outsource it? Do you have a background in recording or editing software?

    What are your reflections now that you have been podcasting for a while? Has it been worth it? How do you measure success or a sense that you are using your time and resources productively?

    I hope you enjoy this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities as to where your legal career may take you.

    Ep 26 - The art (and strategy) of career reinvention with Fiona McLay

    Ep 26 - The art (and strategy) of career reinvention with Fiona McLay

    Fiona is a legal consultant helping lawyers make better use of tech tools. She is also the author of Tech Enabled Lawyer and Consultant and Tech Evangelist at McLay Legal Consulting. She is also someone whose name you will immediately recognise if you are a part of the Australian Legal Innovation and Technology community, where she has a super strong network.

    Fiona spent 27 years of her legal career as a lawyer in both large and small firms. Then, in 2019 a shift happened, and she started steering her legal career towards consulting and technology.

    In this episode, we explore that shift. We talk about how and why she opted out of the partnership track and how she embarked upon a very deliberate and brave path of career reinvention. We discuss:

    The very sensible and conventional start to her legal career;

    Why she decided law firm partnership was not for her;

    How she embraced the “desert of reinvention” and claimed her space in the Australian legal tech ecosystem;

    How she built her strong personal brand and thought leadership, including how she wrote her brilliant book, the Tech Enabled Lawyer;

    Her thoughts on Chat GPT and what it is actually good for;

    The definition of “tech evangelist” and “knowledge management” and ideas that anyone can implement in their own workplaces;

    And much more.

    I hope you enjoy this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities as to where your legal career may take you.

    Ep 25 - Mollie + Rose having a D&M about motherhood, career, ambition + the juggle

    Ep 25 - Mollie + Rose having a D&M about motherhood, career, ambition + the juggle

    You may recall Mollie Tregillis from episode eight. Mollie absolutely nailed the RTL brief and shared really candidly about her twisty career path from top tier legal practice into legal operations and starting her passion project.

    We put a call out on social media to each of our communities to ask you what you wanted us to discuss. And today we answer them all. We get very personal and share what our personal and professional lives look like right now, as well as what is working well and what is not.

    We also share our thoughts on:

    Managing home life and work life

    Tips on preparing for, and being on and then returning from parental leave

    Boundaries between work + home

    How to manage two parents having big jobs

    Our tips for self care and the importance of prioritising ourselves for achieving any kind of balance or success

    What having it all and doing it all looks like to each of us

    And much more.

    The timing of this podcast is very fortuitous. I have just had my second baby. Mollie and I are both in the thick of figuring it all out.

    I hope you enjoy this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities as to where your legal career may take you.

    Ep 24 - Alison Cusack on navigating her unique place in maritime law.

    Ep 24 - Alison Cusack on navigating her unique place in maritime law.

    Alison Cusack is Australia'a most famous maritime lawyer. And in this episode we learn why.

    Alison is absolutely fabulous. And the definition of someone who is boldly carving out their unique place in our legal profession. She has defied ALL the conventional legal career wisdom and advice to achieve her success.

    She dropped out of Electrical Engineering at Melbourne University to study Law/Business at Victoria University. She then did a generalist ATO Graduate program, before she landed an inhouse legal role at global shipping company ANL.

    After ANL, she wanted to gain private practice experience. But she obviously did not have it... And the law firms she applied to required it.

    So what did she do?

    She started her own law firm to get that private practice legal experience.

    It was only meant to last 6 months before she got herself a "proper" law firm job. Five years later, Cusack & Co, and Alison Cusack are both thriving. She represents massive global, billion dollar clients and is consistently nominated for industry awards. International law firms are her “competition” and she markets herself via comics.

    In this honest conversation Alison and I cover how she successfully navigated this very twisty, alternative legal career path, as well as:

    Failure - who says we have failed?
    Being liked vs being respected
    Developing the skills to advocate for gender equality
    Why we deserve more and how we can demand more
    Law firm marketing and business development
    Defying the odds and doing it on our own terms

    I hope you enjoy this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities as to where your legal career may take you.
