Welcoming Your Body Into the New Year: A Meditation

Welcoming Your Body Into the New Year: A Meditation

    Episode 106:

Today’s class is a short meditation that can be done lying down in savasana or sitting upright.
Our inquiry of study during this meditation was inspired by two of my most influential teachers, Insight Meditation teacher Mark Nunberg and Feldenkrais trainer Jeff Haller.
You won’t need anything for this class, except a cushion or blanket to sit on, or if you choose to lie down, please have any props you will need if you choose to do the meditation lying down.

    Getting to Know Your Spine

    Episode 105:

In this 35 minute practice we will be utilizing a thin blanket roll to wake up spinal flexion, extension and rotation all along the spine.  This is a warm up that I have been teaching variations of in many of my yoga classes lately. I hope you learn something about your spine!

You can also find Level 1 and 2 yoga classes that start with this practice in the Body Matter Library. Just search for "Getting to Know Your Spine".
Or access a full course that uses these concepts in A Tactile Spine - The Blending of Yoga + Feldenkrais.

    Weighted Breathing

    Weighted Breathing

    Episode 104:

Today’s class is a short breath awareness meditation done in savasana with a weight placed on the belly.
You will need something heavy that you can place on your abdomen. If you have a yoga sandbag, this works great. Most people don’t have that, so I suggest finding one or two very thick books. A thick textbook could work well. If you are using a book, then you will also want to have a blanket or a towel that you can place underneath the book, so that the weight is not hard or pressing into any part of you in an uncomfortable way.

    Covering the Eyes - Feldenkrais

    Covering the Eyes - Feldenkrais

    Episode 103:

Today’s class is focused on calming the eyes. This class is similar to Episode 56, but I wanted to re record and re-teach the class, as it has been a popular episode and I wanted to get a higher quality audio version of it for you.

In this short Feldenkrais lesson, the eyes, their state of calm, and the quality of our dark vision becomes a marker of the overall state of the nervous system. When one’s visual stimulation calms down, it can have a relaxing effect on the neck, jaw, breathing, face and more. And as a result, your whole self will settle down, get quiet and the sharpness of your vision can increase. So, let's see how we can organize our vision to make the orientation clear and smooth, so that the muscle tone in the whole body can become organized and engaged to do a function well.

If you enjoy this lesson, you may consider joining the Feldenkrais Series:
Being Good to Yourself: Caring for your Neck, Shoulders, Eyes, & Breath
In 8 lessons we explore how important the eyes are for organizing the rest of the body.

    Restoring Attention to the Breath

    Restoring Attention to the Breath

    Episode 102:

Today’s class is an exploration of the breath. In yoga, we call this pranayama. However today’s lesson will be more of a Feldenkrais inspired way of paying attention to the breath. With each proposal, each variation of breathing, I invite you to listen and take care. If at any moment you feel the way you are breathing creates tension or shortness of breath, please do the breathing proposal with much less intensity or even imagine the movement.

If you enjoy this lesson, you may consider joining the Feldenkrais Series:
Being Good to Yourself: Caring for your Neck, Shoulders, Eyes, & Breath
In this series, we will explore lessons that promote self-connection and pleasure, finding equanimity in movement, and adapting to change with resilience. In a world where technology has become ever more prevalent, it can be easy to feel disconnected from our bodies, our emotions, and the people around us. Tension in the neck, shoulders and eyes can become a persistent nuisance, but through the gentle, exploratory movements of the Feldenkrais Method, we can find a sense of joy and connection that is uniquely human. Check out more info on this series that anyone can join via livestream or recordings.

Yoga Nidra - Non Sleep Deep Rest

Yoga Nidra - Non Sleep Deep Rest

    Episode 101:

A 25 minute Yoga Nidra class.
Yoga Nidra is a guided savasana that leads you into a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping. The practice draws our attention inwards, and we can learn to slip between the states of wakefulness and sleep. This is a great class to do right before bed.

Amazingly helpful

I never expected Feldenkrais audio lessons could be so clear and effective. Sarah’s lessons work even better for me than lessons I’ve had in person.

So great I could cry. Good podcast voice.

A friend sent me the neck part 1 podcast and when I finished the episode I wanted to cry. My neck pain was to a point where I wasn't able to sleep more than 40mins at a time but after one episode I felt the relief I so badly needed.
Of I could give more stars I would.

wonderful

I just did my first class, listening along with this podcast. So grateful to have an audio option as I'm quite burned out on video yoga at this point in the pandemic. Sarah's cues are clear and helpful. I felt both challenged and relaxed in the right ways. Thank you!
