"What does torture sound like?" - In this episode, Sara and I talk to Meron Estefanos, an Eritrean refugee advocate, journalist, and activist, who has the answer to this. Meron tells us all about her country of origin, that's been dubbed "The North Korea of Africa": Eritrea. She tells us why every month thousands of Eritreans have to flee their country to escape the cruelty of the dictatorship and what happens to them when they do. Furthermore, she explains what happens in the Sinai desert to refugees who get captured there by criminal gangs who abuse them, torture them and extort money from their families for their release. We also address the struggle about the conflict with the Tigray region and the complex history behind it. Meron Estefanos is a first-hand witness to the horror refugees face on their perilous journeys, she's witnessed unspeakable crimes, yet never gave up on people in need. She also speaks to us about how these experiences make her feel, what she thinks of EU migration policies and what we can do to help.

We had to take a bit of a podcast break because I was on the first mission of SEA-EYE 4 as RHIB Communicator, alongside Sára Činčurová, Journalist and Human Rights activist. In this special episode, we share our thoughts, feelings, and impressions from the first-ever rescue mission of Sea-Eye's new vessel. We try to reconstruct the entire mission with its total of 6 rescue cases in less than 3 days and 408 rescued people aboard. We explain our roles and try to give a very personal and heartfelt insight as to what happened aboard the rescue boats and the mothership. Together we recount our most memorable moments, conversations we had with the survivors, and what we've learned during these intense four weeks.

In dieser Folge spricht Hafenschiffer & Aktivist Dariush von den IUVENTA10 mit uns darüber, warum die EU Menschen auf der Flucht und Menschen, die Flüchtende aus Seenot retten, nicht nur behindert, sondern sogar versucht rechtlich gegen sie vorzugehen. Wir diskutieren darüber, warum die EU versucht die Seenotrettung mit allen Mitteln zu verhindern und damit ganz bewusst den Verlust von Menschenleben auf See hervorruft. Dariush ist einer von jenen Personen, die in Italien dafür völlig zu Unrecht angeklagt werden, dass sie das Sterben im Mittelmeer aktiv verhindern, indem sie Menschen vor dem Ertrinken retten. Er erzählt von seinen Einsätzen, der Anklage in Italien, warum er das eigentlich alles macht, der rassistischen und tödlichen Politik der EU und warum es „eigentlich gar nicht um ihn geht“.

In dieser Folge dreht sich, anlässlich unseres Erfolgs vor Gericht im Verfahren gegen die Hetze der AfD, alles um das Thema Hass im Netz und wie man damit umgeht. Für uns ist ganz klar, wir lassen uns von all der Hetze, den Lügen und den Drohungen zwar nicht beirren, jedoch werden wir ganz entschlossen und wenn nötig auch mit Rechtsmitteln dagegen vorgehen. Dazu erzählt uns Sea-Eye-Anwalt Jeremias Mameghani von dem gewonnenen Verfahren gegen den AfD-Politiker Georg Pazderski, wie er zu Sea-Eye kam, wie man sich gegen solche Angriffe erfolgreich wehrt und was er dabei alles erlebt hat.

Trigger warning: abuse & violence against women*

This episode on Women's Day is focusing specifically on the plights, hardships & horrors that female refugees go through, why and how we need to protect them & also goes to show how strong and resilient these women* are and how they keep on fighting to survive and even thrive in the most difficult of circumstances. I invited my good friend, journalist & activist Sára Činčurová, who focuses a lot on human rights and especially women*'s rights & refugees to tell us about her experiences during her interviews with many women* refugees who have risked their lives to save themselves and often also their children's lives.
We salute all of them for their strength and their love & we want to appreciate all the womxn supporting other womxn & all the survivors of gender-based violence out there.
All women* deserve a life in safety and dignity.

Viele von euch kennen das Bistum Trier vielleicht aus einer unserer letzten Pressemitteilungen, denn das Bistum hat Sea-Eye mit einer großzügigen Spende für die Überfahrt der SEA-EYE 4 ins Mittelmeer unterstützt. Wir wollten daher wissen, warum sich das Bistum Trier dazu entschieden hat, sich mit Sea-Eye für die zivile Seenotrettung zu engagieren. Der Generalvikar erzählt uns, welche Bedeutung die Seenotrettung aus christlicher Sicht hat, was es dabei für Reaktionen aus dem Umfeld des Bistums gab und warum Glauben immer auch handeln bedeutet.
