Great Primer

Okay people, let's not expect too much here. This is a great starter that makes finance less scary. That's a good thing. Making finances seem doable to people, that's a good thing. I've long been a skeptic of the movers and shakers in the financial industry who rake in the dough for barely (if they are lucky) making the same returns as the market for their clients. I liked the breakdown of when you should find someone, how to divorce a loser advisor and what to look for in someone if you can't do it yourself.

Oversimplified, misleading, one-sided, no data.

Einstein said, “Everything should be made as simple as it can be, but not simpler.” Case in point here, the authors have tried to make a complicated subject (and entire industry) of financial planning and advice oversimplified to where it is misleading and unhelpful to the common man, which is opposite of their goals.

In regard to the episode on fees and advisors— Please consider interviewing experts who work in the field, versus other journalists. Especially when your two sources mostly agree, it’s a good sign you need another source. Financial planning is about much more than ‘performance’. As I saw a plumber post recently, you’re not paying less because the job only took 30 minutes. You’re paying for the 10+ years of experience. Sometimes hiring a cheap plumber means fixing bigger problems later.

Also, where’s the link to the data on claims that index investing outperforms, or that commissions are bad? Many commission-based portfolios outperform fee-based over longer time windows.
