Self Portraits as Other People is a hyper-creative, psycho-active variety show wherein multidimensional artist, filmmaker, and wordsmyth The Ungoogleable Michaelangelo engages his guests in social storytelling to mindfully and artfully investigate where the limits of language meet the fringes of Reality.

The show is constantly defying, redefining, and refining itself. Each episode is its own schizovereign entity, but there are themes that are built upon from pod to pod--themes like Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind, Divination, Daemonic reality, Magic, Language, Psychedelics, Dreams, Art, Poetry, Cinema, Animism, Precognition, Shamanism, and so on. Each episode is preceded by an intricately sound-scaped introduction that offers the invisible listener a lens through which to view the conversation that is to follow, along with otherwise cosmic, comedic, and contemplative content.

The shownotes offer hyperlinked rabbitholes that will allow you to dig deeper into wonderlands touched upon on air. Occasionally a Bonus, solo pod is bath-bombed into the stream to showcase stand-alone story fragments that have escaped from the dark archives of never before released materials, or from the vaults of "Patreon-only".

Right from the start, SPAOP wasted no time jumping off the deep end into the highlands, linguistically levitating somewhere between the fatherland and the mothership, where laughing angels drink from the crying well and the cosmic giggle reflects its cracked smile on the surface of the shattered mirror-pool. If you're new here, and are wondering where to start, you are invited to listen in any order. Start at the last episode for the most cutting edge, newest now, and track back from there to witness the devolution, or start at the beginning and work your way up to the present, or pick a pod with a title & description that piques your curiosity. The choice is yours. We'd love to hear from you, so don't hesitate to reach out, or leave a review.

    Leishmaniasis (Solo Pod)

    Leishmaniasis (Solo Pod)

In this episode I host a parasite instead of a conventional guest. In the Mexican jungle, deforestation unleashed Leishmania, a parasite vectored by a sandfly, and I am infected. Marked by volcanic lesions on my left cheek and right hand I'm undergoing an impatient transformation(TM), and as I wait for medicine to arrive, I examine my experience through shamanic, ecological, and pragmatic lenses. Relaying the story in classic SPAOP-fashion, I investigate themes of inter-species diplomacy, the thin line between a parasite and a symbiot, between psychedelic ecology and ecodelic psychology, between parasitology and parapsychology, and contemplate the merits of redemption.

Marcel Kuijsten - Julian Jaynes and the Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind

    ( 🎧 &"introspectacles" recommended 4 optimal immersion & enjoyment )

There are few words in circulation with as many disparate & ill-defined interpretations as “consciousness” & no one, as far as I’m concerned, has narrowed down a more concise definition thanJulian Jaynes in his 📖 The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind.

Marcel Kuijsten founded the Julian Jaynes Society & has, along w a range of experts in various disciplines,
continued to distribute, distill, explain, & expand upon Jaynes’ work through a number of publications that clarify the theory, dispel misconceptions, & present a growing body of evidence to support it. His latest 📖 is titled Conversations on Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind.

All of this complex material is meticulously researched & articulated, & in this episode Marcel & I do our best to navigate & outline the theory’s various facets & examine its implications.

During the intro I relay the story of my time “playing dead for a living” on the set of Westworld, a show about a themepark of AI-cowboys-gone-wild, which heavily leans on Jaynes’ theory to fulfill its narrative arc.

(( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment ))

“Art is the only truly effective means we have of engaging, in a communal context, the psyche on its own terms,” writes jF Martel, the co-host of the Weird Studies podcast and the author of the brilliant book “Reclaiming Art in the Age of Artifice”, in which he distills a clear, working definition of art, in relation to its antithesis, artifice.

Treating the episode as a book report, we use the philosophy put forth in its pages as a springboard to examine the implications of ai-generated images, and the potential consequences of outsourcing one’s intuitive sensibilities to a dreaming machine.

    Jake Kobrin - Interfacial Magick

(( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment ))

Proficient in both digital & traditional media, Jake is one of the few formally trained visionary artists. I was his guest on ep.10 of The Quarantine Sessions, a podcast he began hosting at the onset of the pandemic. Nowadays he sporadically casts pods as solo spells, wherein he discusses his study & practice of Magick.

Alongside a curated pantheon of experts and professionals Jake also facilitates Online workshops & in-person retreats that focus on the intersection of art, mindfulness, & the western esoteric tradition.

We talk about his recent ventures into co-creating w/ Midjourney, where text-prompted spells generate AI-art. We relate the process to divinatory practices, & consider that perhaps egregorial entities are the mind’s own AI agencies.

We also touch upon his rarely discussed experience w/ hook suspension.

Though it’s not his main avenue of expression, Jake also plays music, & I included one of his piano compositions in the intro to showcase the scope of his multivalent talent.

Dave Green - A Draw-Bridge Between (The Waking State & The Lucid Dream)

(( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment ))

Dave Green’s simple line drawings come across as iconographic glyphs. These drawings are recreations, upon waking, of drawings he created in a lucid dream state.

Lately he has been experimenting with giving his pen & paper to other people in his dreams to see what they create.

His art has been featured in BBC Science Focus and DreamTime magazine. He has lectured about his work at the Tate Modern & is the subject of an upcoming documentary by the World Science Festival.

We talk about dream practices, artful means of building bridges between worlds, & creating one’s own custom, divinatory lexicon through which to smuggle objects across the borders of waking & dream.

    Paradise Has Parasites (Solo Pod)

    (( headphones recommended ))

Time for a solo pod! In the spirit of modular storytelling this episode offers five written/spoken/sound-scaped vignettes. All the stories are based in the Ayahuasca experience, sourced from my private stash. Not unlike an audiobook, the dark, poetic prose intends to take the audience on an immersive listening experience, enchanting them into an altered state. The main tale takes place at the intersection of parapsychology and parasitology, and revolves around my visionary encounter with a parasite who, during a 2014 sojourn in the Peruvian amazon, held my body and mind hostage.

The segments are tentatively titled as follows:

    Sharing Circle

    The Man In The Jungle

    The Secret Cannot Be Contained

In The Beginning Was The Shhh...

Colonel Carapace: in Cherished Memory of a Perished Parasite

Eclectic and Enlightening

A unique and well produced podcast on a variety of fascinating topics. 5 stars.

Great auditory experience.

Michelangelo is funny, insightful and hyper creative and it shows in this podcast. It is highly immersive and the production of it is great, incorporating original music and poetry woven into his interviews with a variety of interesting guests, resulting in a florid, rich audio experience. It’s is a great companion on long grueling hikes out of the wilderness when you haven’t slept in days and have been suffering from altitude sickness, as I’ve learned. Bravo. Keep up the good work.

Grand Archduke of Unwasted Time

Hey y'all, I wrote this review last night, pre-itunes download, and it's every bit as true:

I listened to my dear friend the YouWishHeWasGoogleable Michaelangelo's podcast yesterday, and the delightful result of nostalgia and admiration compels me to write this review instead of sleep. I've known Michaelangelo for almost a decade, and I've never seen him drop an improv ball, never. Our rapid fire breakfast banter when life allowed us to cohabitate betrayed a sometimes quiet, pensive, mind. How brilliant it is, then, that the hour of his art I had the privilege to consume today happened to be a delightful mix of the two. Guys, I don't think you understand. Michaelangelo can paint with both hands at the same time, while reciting Scottish rap, and making dramatic faces. His diving into the spiritual was not a hobby, it has been intrinsically woven around him since he first found thought. I couldn't stretch my imagination enough to invent a criticism for not only his joyous presence, but his incessant outpouring of art, nay, love. If you're looking for what you need, good news.
