    Suicide Squad (2016)

    Suicide Squad (2016)

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss the first film of the Suicide Squad duology. Bad guys help a rogue group commit morally ambiguous deeds to save the world in a convoluted fashion whilst predictable music drops accompany them. Starring Ike Barinholtz, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie & Will Smith.

Based on the cult DC comics created by Robert Kanigher, Ross Andru, and John Ostrander, Suicide Squad has too complicated a plot for its own good. Such a thing is a bit of a risk when you have over half a dozen characters in the titular group (see also X-Men), but a long series of character intros before the main story gets started doesn't help things. An Academy Award winner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Suicide Squad makes some bold visual choices; some work (Harley Quinn), some don't (Joker). A grey boring desaturated color palette during the action scenes and a theatrical cut that is softer than what director David Ayer intended (no, the Extended Cut is not his director's cut, although it's a slight improvement) don't help things either.

To misquote the late Leslie Neilsen from Spy Hard, Suicide Squad is "no Gouda!"

Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi (1983)

Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi (1983)

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and BJ discuss the last film in the original Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. A son (Mark Hamill) burns his dad's (Sebastian Shaw) corpse.

Wrapping up the first arc of the Skywalker Saga a little too neatly, Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi meanders its way to a moving finale. Jabba the Hutt's spectacle is tons of fun, but it feels like an overly hearty appetizer before the main course of Luke Skywalker confronting Darth Vader and the Emperor. The Blu-ray release of this film added a controversial line of dialogue when Darth Vader turns against his master the Emperor.

Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back (1980) (GUEST: Jason Swank of Rebel Force Radio)

Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back (1980) (GUEST: Jason Swank of Rebel Force Radio)

First, Mat Bradley-Tschirgi has an interview with popular Star Wars podcaster Jason Swank of Rebel Force Radio on Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Then, Mat, Thrasher, and BJ have a longer discussion on the movie itself. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) ditches his friends to train with an old green alien (Frank Oz).

After the victorious ending of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, this sequel starts with the Rebels on the run on the ice planet of Hoth. Our heroes split up to different planets for reasons, but eventually they get back together again. After a certain paternal revelation, things will never be the same for Luke, Han, Leia, and Lando.

A darker tale than the first with inspired cinematography by Peter Suschitzky, The Empire Strikes Back is a fan favorite for a reason. At times it's meditative, at other times it's a retro romance with sparky dialogue and sparkier performances. An opening large scale battle on Hoth with the elephantine AT-ATs has been adapted into countless video games. This flick is well worth revisiting if it's been a while.

Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope (1977)

Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope (1977)

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and BJ discuss the movie that started the Star Wars craze those kids are into, Star Wars; it was later rereleased as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) thinks being a farmer sucks, so he meets an old man (Alec Guinness) who gives him a glowy sword.

After he couldn't buy the movie rights for Flash Gordon, writer-director George Lucas decided to do his own sci fi saga and the rest is history. A simple plot, amusing dialogue, and thrilling space combat scenes give this first Star Wars film more zip than you might remember. It's clear this was meant to work as both a standalone movie and the start of a trilogy based on how the ending wraps everything up with just enough threads out there to keep audiences wondering.

    Critters 4 (1992)

    Critters 4 (1992)

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss the fourth film in the original Critters saga. Charlie (Don Keith Opper) is put into carbon freeze with two Critters eggs, but they get picked up decades later by the RSS Tesla. Starring Angela Bassett, Brad Dourif, and Terrance Mann.

Going for an Alien pastiche, Critters 4 shows a spark or two of cleverness with its cast of genre favorites. There's also a sassy elevator. While pretty low on Critters action until the end, we get an oddball crew to pal around with and moody lighting. Not a bad sequel. Not at all.

Critters 3 You Are What They Eat (1991)

Critters 3 You Are What They Eat (1991)

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss third film in the original Critters saga. Families in a rundown apartment complex bicker while Critters try to murder them.

A direct-to-video cheapie, Critters 3 is the feature film debut of Leonardo DiCaprio. The jokes are more slapstick this time around. An uninspired setting and muted violence make for a not great sequel. There is little ambition here.

I Am A Time Traveler From Outer Space & I Love Sequelcast2

In the world there are few true absolutes. These are the true guarantees that allow us to thrive as a culture, yet also keep us grounded into the now. They allow us to take our dreams with us on a journey to unimaginable heights and the slights amidst the falling sensation of doom. Death, taxes, life, death and Sequelcast2. The duality, the drama, the comedy and the insight which allow the very earth to spin daily is encompassed in the vision of the advanced commentary this show has collected as a gift, bestowed upon an unready and obviously unworthy audience, I highly recommend listening to this show. It’s changed the way I view the world and made me 69 percent smarter!
