Our values are the ideas and principles that inform how we interact with the world around us. But, as broken human beings, sometimes the surface level becomes more important than what is happening underneath or inside our hearts. Over time, as our values from the world shape our picture of Jesus, He appears less and less like a King. Because when Jesus looks like us, He isn't all that powerful. Jesus desires to turn our values into something new, something better, something beautiful. He cares more about our hearts and motives than our behavior and mindless obedience. Jesus is calling us to go beneath the surface because that is where HE does the work. After dying to ourselves, we have to learn to depend on Christ and allow Jesus to be the thing that drives and shapes us.
