Shift Change to Intentional Moments in Parenting Shift Changer Podcast

    • Self-Improvement

In this episode, I sit down with my friend, Valerie Ellis, who is a wife, mother, non-profit grant writer, memory maker, avid book reader, children's book author, and co-author to the blog, Our Everyday Parables. We talk about how being intentional in our parenting can create moments that are educational, creative, memorable, and the building blocks for growing our children's faith. Each of us as parents are facing different trials and tragedies, but regardless, we are all seen and known by Jesus. Leaning into Him will give us the guidance to parent our children in their unique way. These intentional moments in parenting starts with prayer and practice.

Sticky note quote: "Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow.” Mary Anne Radmacher

How do you shift change to intentional parenting? Valerie uses the acronym SHIFT to describe how this can be done by giving us Simple Honest Ideas For Teaching:

S - Simple. The most memorable moments are ones that are kept simple. It doesn’t have to be this grand thing. Look at moments together or failed attempts as moment makers. You may not feel like you’re a good teacher and like church has it covered, but your kids want to hear from you. They want to know what is important to you and about your faith. You won’t always get it right, but remember, courage is the quiet voice that says, “I will try again tomorrow.” Plus, it’s not all up to us. God cares about our children way more than we ever could. "His love for them is great and His compassion never fails. They are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22-23

H - Honest. By honest I mean, authentic, and that starts with cultivating your own relationship with God—leaning on God and learning about him. Honest also speaks to sharing your own ups and downs (in ways that are age appropriate of course). I can’t speak for all kids, but my oldest has a little authenticity radar. He’s never said it to me, but I get the feeling he sometimes—not always--thinks: "Mom and Dad are just teaching me this because they want me to act a certain way or because they are supposed to." When I share something about my very own personal faith walk, he seems to let his guard down a bit more. He sees me as more of a fellow Christ-seeker and less of mom who is always trying to make him do what’s good for him.

I - Ideas For Teaching - aka Thriving! It’s not all about information going from you to your kid, which is kind of implied in the word teaching. It’s about growing together and about them cultivating their own relationship with God. And of course, as our brothers and sisters in Christ, we can learn from them too. They are a valuable part of our Christian community. It's about teaching by your example and the examples of others, and them thriving as they grow alongside you.
