We are a collective of Australian women’s sports advocates, content creators and fans who for years—decades even—have been left wanting more from mainstream coverage of women in sport.

Realising we could achieve more together than separately, we combined our skills, experience and knowledge to create Siren: A Women in Sport Collective.

Active Support in Women's Football and a culture collision

Active Support in Women's Football and a culture collision

Last month a W-League Melbourne Derby was marred by a group of Melbourne Victory supporters hurling abuse, and a glass bottle, at Melbourne City's Teagan Micah. Siren co-founder Danielle Warby speaks to Melbourne Victory active support group leader Bonny Boles and The Matildas active support leader Brodie Wales about the culture of support in the women's game.

    AFLW 2020 Draft Wrap

With the 2020 draft, AFLW lists for 2021 are locked and loaded. How is your club’s list placed to content in the competition’s fifth season? Unsurprisingly, skilful midfielder Ellie McKenzie made her way to Richmond as pick one, but there were plenty of unexpected selections made throughout the 61 draft picks. After breaking down every move of the trade and sign period in September, Alison Smirnoff and Gemma Bastiani go through draftee by draftee to establish what new talent has joined each team.

Back to our roots: Community clubs and Kicking Against The Pricks

Back to our roots: Community clubs and Kicking Against The Pricks

Melbourne-based filmmakers Alison Smirnoff and Bill Irving are the team behind the film and they have both found their lives profoundly impacted by the women’s game. The pair sat down with Siren for an in-depth chat about the project and their motivations behind it.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of community sport—particularly in Victoria— has meant that production has unfortunately been put on pause this year.

Alison and Bill are adamant, however, that this film is for the community and by the community, so they are doing a call out for archival footage. Yes, this means you and your community footy team.

It doesn’t have to be on field footage. In fact, the more off field vision the better. It can be phone videos, huddle videos, change room videos, footage at training, footage at the after match, singing at the pub, dancing in the streets, drunken rants to the coach – they literally want it all and the older the better.

    Introducing Halftime Huddle

    Introducing Halftime Huddle

Siren is thrilled to announce our first official collaboration – introducing: Halftime Huddle!

Halftime Huddle is Sarah Burt and Taylor Capannolo, a podcast team with a passion for women in sport, sharing stories and great conversation. No wonder we wanted to team up with them!

When Siren formed, we co-founders were determined to make Siren not just a platform where we could contribute more coverage of women in sport, but as a space to amplify the work of many other women who do this work in the alternative media space. There are so many hard working women who write, podcast, photograph women in sport and we believe we’re stronger when we work together to celebrate and elevate each other.

This is why we try to include as much work by women on women’s sports in our newsletter and offer opportunities when we can to other women.

It’s so exciting that we can now extend that approach to Halftime Huddle who have a fantastic podcast that features a variety of women in sport and their incredible stories. Look out for their podcast in our newsletter and more of their great content across our socials and their instagram!

Learn more about our Halftime Huddle collaboration and Sarah and Taylor’s story in this podcast.
