Ep 64: Filmmaker Showcase #4 – Anil Dhokai, Kai Brown, Kelly Campbell, Mike Madigan, and Barry Thornburg

First on the show for Filmmaker Showcase #4 is Skyline alum, Anil Dhokai. Anil and Strawhouse Pictures are back in Winchester with Unblocked a short sci-fi comedy about aliens whose cloaking device malfunctions. It’s a fun film with a great punchline!

Another Skyline alum, Kai Brown discusses the short film True Crime, made by Brown and her production partner Kimberly Rizzo. A standalone second installment in their Feminist Thriller Trilogy and follow up the short Judy. We’re already chomping at the bit for film three!

Newcomer to Skyline but a familiar face on many shows you love, Kelly Campbell is next. Her award winning short film An Encounter takes a look at a life altering day when to acquaintances agree to ditch school and tool around Dublin. Adapted from one of Joyce’s short stories in Dubliners, this modern take will shake you.

Mike Madigan is up next on the show. His film, Second Gen is a trip across the uncanny valley! When a seemingly good idea isn’t received as well as hoped.

Wrapping up the episode is our friend Barry Thornburg. His film From the Soul brings us into the world of spirited gospel choirs. As Black Gospel music is cast into the popular music spotlight by the likes of Kanye and Snoop Dogg, longtime practitioners strive to remind the world that it isn’t simply a fashionable aesthetic, but an agent of social change and of spiritual salve.

Next up, demonstrating the best rapport I’ve ever witnessed between two filmmakers, Dina Laura and Giulia Aguiar share insights with Mick and me about their short film Pillow Talk.

We close out the show with Derek Patterson and Cory Mason who’ve made an incredible homage to classic film noir with their impressive short SNUBNOSE.

Ep 62: Filmmaker Showcase #2 with Hyten Davidson, Al Julian, Aslak Danbolt, and Frank Mosley & Hugo De Sousa

First on the show for Filmmaker Showcase #2 we have the lovely Hyten Davidson! Her film, The West Virginian Starfish details a faithful night just off the Appalachian Trail. After the mysterious exit of her father, Carly is stuck with his old mission, picking up defeated thru-hikers from The Appalachian Trail. One hiker’s companionship over the course of a night, however, will set Carly on a new path forever.

Next we have Al Julian, Skyline rookie, discussing his short film GIFT, in which a jaded alcoholic has his world view challenged by an unexpected act. See the trailer and get your tickets to this impressive short, streaming at Skyline this year.

Back at Skyline with another amazing short drama is Aslak Danbolt. He impressed the hell out of us a few years back with his film Last Base and we can’t wait to share his latest, MAMMA, with you all! It’s Christmas Eve and Synnøve is searching for her drug-addicted daughter Michelle in an almost desolate city. Filmed with amateur actors whose real lives are portrayed in the film. Incredible!

We wrap today’s episode with the filmmaking duo we’re sure you’re going to be hearing a lot about. Frank Mosley and Hugo De Sousa bring us THE EVENT. It’s 2 AM, and Vince just wants to know why. Is this not the best logline in the world?

Recording these Filmmaker’s Showcases is a blast. I see many more of these in our future!

Ep 61: Filmmaker Showcase: Thom Hilton, Kevin Keck & Brandon Evans, Kamari Bright, and Rodney Stringfellow

Ep 61: Filmmaker Showcase: Thom Hilton, Kevin Keck & Brandon Evans, Kamari Bright, and Rodney Stringfellow

This show is special! We have five short filmmakers on the show today and they each were kind enough to come on Pulling Focus to discuss their films and filmmaking.

First up, Thom Hilton and his family touchstone, short documentary One Drift and We All Go Home. Kenai, Alaska. July 1998. Commercial fishing has been closed for nine days. Dozens of workers have lost nearly an entire year’s income waiting for regulations to lift all while a nearby tourist spot teems with joyfully unregulated sportfishermen.

Next up, we speak with Tennessean filmmakers, Kevin Keck & Brandon Evans, about their film Manufactured Luck. Manufactured Luck dives into the day to day life of a young Appalachian girl and her grandfather as the two attempt to win a bike in a local grocery store sweepstakes.

The delightful Kamari Bright is in our third segment with her film Family Recipe where a young girl’s baking lesson from her grandfather teaches her acceptance as she learns the similarities between ingredients and people.

Finally, our final segment is with the ever charming Rodney Stringfellow. Returning to Skyline with his latest film Everybody Don’t Electric Slide. At a large family gathering after a funeral, an older woman confronts an awkward young man she doesn’t recognize. In order to reveal his identity, she forces him to use a haunted typewriter that will only type the truth.

Recording this Filmmaker’s Showcase was a blast. Remember, tickets for all these short films and everything else programmed at Skyline Indie Film Fest are available now at www.skylineindiefilmfest.org. Thank you to everyone who took the time to help us foster the indie spirit.

Great show with fresh perspective

Great show! Yeah I said that in the title too, but it’s true. This isn’t your typical movie review pod and thats why I’m a subscriber. Fresh takes, not the same old tired arguments you hear over and over.
