S05-E03: “Interdimensional Breach” by The Carbon Dioxide Ensemble
In celebration of Halloween, I have a special release for you. It’s a live recording of a song called “Interdimensional Breach” from a set we did as the Carbon Dioxide Ensemble at the Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meet’s 2023 Halloween Synth Concert in Boulder. It was improvised and recorded in one take in front of a live audience and captured as a multi-channel recording.
Members of the Carbon Dioxide Ensemble include Thomas Lundy on Copper Heart articulated with dry ice, Victoria Lundy on Theremin and Live Electronics, and I (Mark Mosher) on Synths, Live Sampling, and Heart FX. More info at linktr.ee/co2e and carbondioxideensemble.com.
We will be premiering a multi-cam and multimedia video of this same performance (including video shot on a 360 camera) of the entire set on October 30th night at 9 PM Mountain time over on youtu.be/6mdcgX6Gfbk?si=JyX4BQWJJUEKDl9P.
Here is the storyline for the video.
00:00 Part 1 - Initiating Transmission. The set opens with us slowly building halloween vibes from Boulder Station.
00:47 Part 2 - Warp Bubble. The venue begins to warp as our signals attract energy from another dimension.
03:02 Part 3 - Interdimensional Breach. A breach to another dimension opens just outside the venue. Energy from this dimension reacts to our performance.
10:29 Part 4 - Extreme Heart. Noise from the heart begins to close the breach.
11:02 Part 5 - Return To Your Normally Scheduled Life. The breach starts to close and we return back to normal reality in Boulder.
No humans were harmed in this performance.

Customer Reviews
Goosebumps and Deep Breaths
I'm trying to restrain myself in writing this review as it'd be easy to come off sounding a bit hyperbolic... But these rich soundscape "stories" sincerely do thrill my senses...
The concept for Sonic Encounters (so far, and in my interpretation) is this... You read a short text (sometimes the title is enough) on the premise of the "story" before listening. Then you listen to a purely sonic piece of field recording morphed with music, electronic manipulation, and performance, and you're immediately transported via your own imagination's 3D projection of his premise. Mark's become a consummate sound artist. He creates powerful imagery and elicits surprisingly keen emotional response from the listener without being heavy-handed. His economy and value in precision is proof of his skill.
My favorite story so far is "Metamorphosis Under the Chatham Light". I get chills just thinking about it. My very close second is "And What Do Trees Hear When the Wind Blows". Read each premise before you listen. Or not. No matter, the pieces will creep into your consciousness and take up residence.
