SMM 079: How to Find Joy in the Bible that Leads Your Children to Jesus || Heather Erickson

SMM 079: How to Find Joy in the Bible that Leads Your Children to Jesus || Heather Erickson

I am so excited to share my interview with Heather Erickson. Heather is a wife, mom, Bible teacher, author and worship leader. Heather is also a co-founder of The Chara Project, a ministry to help women of all faiths learn to study the Bible. Heather shares her insights on how you can find joy in the Bible as well as lead your children to Christ.
Find Joy in the Bible Heather starts off sharing how her parents’ love of the Bible made it easier for her to want to know the Bible and its teachings for herself.
She candidly discusses how at one point she questioned everything. Eventually, Heather said she read a scripture about loving God with all your heart, soul and mind. She dug in deep and realized when she loved Jesus with everything, she couldn’t turn away.
She said of this experience, “It took me being willing to walk away from what my parents believed, step into faith for myself, and say, ‘Do I believe what they have brought me up to believe?’ I see it embodied. I see it completely lived out. Am I willing to actually back it up? And when I backed it up with my heart, my soul and my mind, that’s when I realized, this is the real deal.”
Lead Children to Jesus Her parents love of the Bible and their example of living its teachings set the foundation. As a result, Heather points out how her parents let her spread her wings and also find out for herself.
From her experience with her own parents, Heather shares advice to parents. She says to never give up, do the foundational things and let children navigate for themselves.
Towards the end of the episode, Heather shares what she has learned from teaching her children from the Bible. She agrees that many times the teaching happens in everyday moments.
Heather also talks about how studying the Bible herself has helped the teachings to be anchored deep in her heart. Understanding the why of the Bible and not just a checklist of things to do has helped her go from mom fails to mom wins in teaching spiritual things.
The Chara Project Heather has been involved doing Bible studies with women of varying faiths in Utah for many years. She and two of her friends wanted to create a safe place to ask questions and help women learn for themselves. The Chara Project was born
The word “Chara” is a Greek word meaning “joy.” Since Heather and the other co-founders believe joy is what you get when you understand the Bible, the word fit perfectly.
After choosing the word Chara, Heather and her co-founders discovered they could also use the word as an acronym to teach a simple method of studying the Bible.
Listen the episode for all the details of the acronym but here is what each letter stands for:
    C – Context
    H – History
    A – Author
    R – Read
    A – Apply
Using Different Bible Translations I really loved the discussion Heather and I had about using different translations of the Bible. Heather explained that reading different translations is like looking words up in a thesaurus. Varied translations open up your understanding and help paint a better picture of what God is teaching.
Partner with God Heather believes that aligning her heart to God allows her to have a closer relationship with Him. This relationship with God is something she believes she can mirror to the people around her, including her kids. Above all, Heather wants her children to see Christ through her and that journey has started with finding joy in the Bible.

SMM 078 Why a Deep Relationship With God is the Best Way to Be a Better MotherMelissa Buckley

SMM 078 Why a Deep Relationship With God is the Best Way to Be a Better MotherMelissa Buckley

Today I’m interviewing Melissa Buckley. We talk about her journey of learning that developing a deep relationship with God was the best way for her to learn to be a better mother.
Surrendering Before the Miracle Melissa talks about infertility and a priesthood blessing from her dad that led her husband to declare to her, “Our God is a God of miracles.”
In the blessing, Melissa was promised that her body would heal and she would have the children she desired. After the blessing, Melissa was able to move forward with faith and stop trying to control the situation.
The next month Melissa took a pregnancy test and it was positive. Melissa and her husband were thrilled to be pregnant naturally with twins.
She said of this time, “It was this miraculous moment where I had finally fully given over my will to Heavenly Father and that’s when He stepped in and gave me that miracle.”
Navigating Depression: Anti-Depressants + the Book of Mormon Although Melissa had the long awaited children she had prayed for, she struggled with postpartum depression. In the interview she shares the shame and guilt she felt because of the depression.
She discusses how getting medical help and studying her patriarchal blessing helped her start to come out of the depression. She also shares the power she felt from accepting President Nelson’s invitation in October 2018 to read the Book of Mormon by the end of the year.
Melissa gives great advice on how a busy mom can fit in scripture study. She also shares the blessings she has received from reading the Book of Mormon consistently.
Disciple of Jesus Christ First and Mother Second Melissa’s experiences have taught her that she should be a disciple of Jesus Christ first and a mother second.
She shared, “The way for me to be the best mother for my children is to have a deep relationship with God.”
Melissa also shares how her own relationship with Heavenly Father has helped her learn to be a better mother. “For me, I can have a relationship with my Heavenly Father and He can love me in a Godly way, so I can try to emulate that when I mother my children.”
We discuss how motherhood is ever changing, so it makes sense that the most important thing in our life is a constant.
Meekness Through Trials Melissa talks about how we are prepared to do the work God calls us to. She also discusses the things she has learned about meekness from her patriarchal blessing, reading conference talks (see links in show notes) and studying D&C 25.
Melissa shares that she has learned to look back on her adversity with fondness because it has helped her to learn to be meek. Her trials have given her opportunities to be taught by the Spirit.
Overall, Melissa shares her testimony that the answer to all questions and struggles is always Jesus Christ.

SMM 077: How to Be in Tune with the Spirit to Help Children with Mental Health Challenges ||Audra Elkington

SMM 077: How to Be in Tune with the Spirit to Help Children with Mental Health Challenges ||Audra Elkington

Being a mother dealing with a child with mental health challenges can be lonely. That’s why I invited today’s guest, Audra Elkington, to share her experiences. In episode 77, Audra shares her journey helping her 9-year-old daughter navigate anxiety.
Advice and Hope Woven throughout Audra’s journey to help her daughter, you’ll hear her advice on researching and reading as well as finding the right type of therapy for your child.
Listen to hear other advice like recording small successes and finding a trusted friend who will listen.
Audra cautions that the path isn’t easy. She also offers hope to not give up. She says to keep trying until you find something that works for your child.
How to Advocate without Labeling In the interview, Audra also talks about being an advocate for your child. She shared about being prayerful in new situations and about how to advocate without labeling your child.
Audra also believes in not being afraid to stop doing something that isn’t working for your child. Sometimes we don’t have all the answers for our children, she shared. We can just love them.
Spiritual Help with Mental Health She has learned to rely on the Lord for help every step of the way. She shared how 1 Nephi 18:2 about doing things “after the manner which the Lord had shown unto me” helped her gain perspective.
You’ll also hear how Audra’s journey mothering Lena has helped her be in tune with the Spirit and her own instincts. She said, “I think as mothers, we need to trust our gut. If we don’t feel like something is right for our child, we’re probably right.”
We discuss how being in tune with the Spirit is work. But Audra also shared that she never regrets time spent with the Lord.
Overall, Audra’s message to other moms helping children who are experiencing mental health challenges is simple–do everything you can to be in tune with the Spirit.

SMM 076: Why Success or Failure in Goal Setting Does Not Determine Your Worth || Beth Given

SMM 076: Why Success or Failure in Goal Setting Does Not Determine Your Worth || Beth Given

Listen to hear my interview with Beth Given. Beth is a wife and mom to four who believes that small and simple things bring great things in the end. In the interview we talk about feeling inadequate, why achieving goals doesn't determine your worth and how to change your perspective on temple attendance.
If you are feeling stuck in the early days of motherhood, Beth will give you hope that the feelings of inadequacy subside and you will find your own style of mothering.
Beth shares her philosophy on goal setting and how she learned to not let her self-worth be tied up in how well she accomplished the goals she set out to do.
She also talks about how reframing her goal to attend the temple changed the experiences she had while inside and how it has rubbed off on her children.
Through all of her experiences, Beth has learned that doing the little things makes a difference. She knows she is a daughter of Heavenly Parents who love her and has a strong testimony of the help she receives from them.

SMM 075- How God Led One Mom to the Fight Against Human Trafficking Cammy Bowker

SMM 075- How God Led One Mom to the Fight Against Human Trafficking Cammy Bowker

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness month. I wanted to help shed some light on this huge problem by interviewing a mom who is fighting human trafficking and give you ways to help too.
Listen to hear my interview with Cammy Bowker, a wife, mom, teacher and cancer survivor who heard God tell her she needed to something with the second chance she had been given.
During a beach vacation in Mexico she won on the Price is Right (seriously!), Cammy wrote down thoughts and impressions about how she could make a difference in the world.
She noticed children on the beach selling gum. She felt a prompting to help these children and others like them around the world.
Since she was a teacher, Cammy started with building schools and providing education in under developed areas in the world. Those efforts quickly morphed into Cammy being on the front lines of the fight against human trafficking both at home and abroad.
Cammy shares the statistics and issues associated with trafficking. She is a huge proponent of prevention and gives practical ways parents can help protect their children.
She also talks about how she acted immediately on the prompting she felt to do something. Cammy's story gives a great pattern for anyone who feels called to make a difference in any way. As Cammy said, "Just start."
Below you will find a variety of ways you can help the organization Cammy founded, Global Education Philanthropists, in their mission to educate and fight human trafficking.
Cammy's faith was inspiring to me. Her story illustrates well that you don't need to know how everything will turn out. You just have to follow the promptings you receive one at a time and watch the miracles unfold.
