Awesome for us YA writers and readers

I often watch movie reviews to breakdown stories, but this is so much better! I can know better know the craft of writing and get some ideas of what to read from people right inside the industry. Thanks guys!

I want to love it but I can’t

Brian and Robert have great personalities, they are well-spoken and most of the time their reviews are thoughtful and well-developed. That being said, I think some of their views on the fiction they read lack depth and their writing ‘takeaways’ have all been said before. I love the idea of a YA book review podcast and most of their segments... but I think this kind of show could benefit from a woman’s perspective. YA is a female-dominated space and occasionally these gentlemen’s comments strike me as sliiiightly sexist, or just not as empowering to woman as I’d like them to be. In one episode, they suggest that a female author with a commercially successful series could have benefited from beta readers, as if this hugely famous author didn’t have anyone read her books? And in another episode, a book was described as ‘not for boys’ because it wasn’t action and is told from a girls perspective. I think it’s actually quite important for young boys to read stories form a girl’s perspective. Obviously, Brian and Robert are guys who have read a lot of books written by women and I don’t think they mean to offend or put down. I appreciate that they are bringing attention to those female authors, but I hope that if the show is rebooted with new hosts, at least one will be female.

Love this show

Unfortunately, I've only just discovered this podcast, and it's already finished. But I love it. Love the book discussion. I'm a writer and they have influenced my writing and made me do more work in my initial planning stages of my stories.
