Byxxth bnlancb: The Code Book by Simon Singh

Codebreakers are linguistic alchemists, a mystical tribe attempting to conjure sensible words out of meaningless symbols.

Secret messages, lost languages, black chambers, and sneaky spymasters. Crack our code to find the next meeting of book club, where we're whispering about Simon Singh's non-fiction exploration "The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography." Catrina nerds out about linguistics, Aurelien dreams of the crossword-solving spy life, and we both have existential anxiety about quantum computing and the future of privacy.

Hell's bells! It's a special, spooky, Spellman edition of book club. Fairytale of New York: The Changeling by Victor LaValle

Fairytale of New York: The Changeling by Victor LaValle

To believe in only the practical, the rational, the realistic was a kind of glamour as well. But he couldn’t enjoy the illusion of order anymore. Monsters aren’t real until you meet one.
Row to our secret island in the mist for book club to discuss Victor LaValle's modern horror fairy tale "The Changeling." Aurelien and Catrina dive into the layers of history, lore, violence, and fantasy expertly woven together, and armchair analyze Apollo, our favorite hustling bookseller (and occasional jerk). Part family drama, part true crime, part magical quest, it's a look at modern fatherhood; the sacrifices parents make for children; and the stories that we write about ourselves.

The Haunting of Hill House: when people stop being polite and start getting haunted

The Haunting of Hill House: when people stop being polite and start getting haunted

"It’s charming, Eleanor thought, surprised at herself; she wondered if she was the first person ever to find Hill House charming and then thought, chilled, Or do they all think so, the first morning?"

Prop the doors open on your way to book club where we're discussing terror-inducing 1959 classic novel "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. It's the maybe-true story of four strangers, selected to live in an epic house in the hills, who find out what happens when people stop clinging to reality, and start getting haunted. Aurelien questions everything and Catrina has nightmares, as we talk about the trouble with Eleanor, the most disturbing baby book ever created, and why someone left the good silver in an abandoned mansion. And remember: at night, no one can hear you scream.

Hey, Adam Payne! ,

Solidarity In Weirdness

This podcast rules. I love that the hostesses cover things from horror to scifi and are open to any subject matter that leans weird or spooky. The conversational pacing and the fact that you can enjoy the hostesses are having fun and genuinely enjoy discussing the material make it listenable for all, and if I wanted to blow up their spot I’d recommend it to everyone... but as all witches know, if you’re not spooky you cannot sit with us.
