King Lear - Stand Up For Bastards Play On Podcasts

    • Performing Arts

Synopsis.
In the garden outside Gloucester’s Fillmore District mansion, a furious Edmund conspires to take from his brother what he feels he deserves from his father. Having set the trap, he drives to a nightclub where he sets up his brother Edgar for a fall from grace. Elsewhere, on an ocean beach outside of Goneril’s mansion in outer-Richmond, San Francisco, Goneril instructs her servant, Oswald, to treat her father with disdain when he arrives, in the hope that it will push him to go to Regan’s house instead. Inside Goneril’s house, the exiled Kent has returned, disguised as a man-servant, Caius, in order to gain access to Lear. When the King arrives on the sundeck of the house, Kent (now Caius) greets him and wins his affection by shaming Oswald for disrespecting him. Soon after, the Fool arrives and berates Lear through thinly veiled humor for disowning Cordelia and giving his power over to his other two daughters. Finally, Goneril enters and greets her father coldly, telling him to get rid of his unruly knights and keep only the older ones who know their place. Lear defends his Knights and lashes out at Goneril, voicing his regret for shunning Cordelia.
