Some disturbing opinions about addiction

I like this podcast. However, the opinions expressed about addiction are offensive and harmful and uninformed. Saying that addiction is not a mental illness bc it’s a choice to do drugs only serves to add to the stigma of mental illness. Addiction is a mental illness that comes about from things out of one’s control. However one still must be accountable for their poor decisions and actions have consequences, no one is debating that. Is diabetes, obesity, and heart disease no longer a relevant medical condition bc a person chose to eat poorly and chose not to exercise despite knowing the possible consequences? Please don’t speak about something you’re clearly quite ignorant about, not to mention the incredibly judgmental attitude. Not all addicts leave their kids somewhere for three days and forget where they are, not all addicts don’t feed their kids. Your careless remarks are very disparaging to those of us who are recover and especially those seeking treatment.
